A nossa casa é onde os telescópios estão
Benvindo ao Observatório de La Silla do ESO, local onde acolhemos vários telescópios desde os anos 1960 e que podemos ver nesta Fotografia da Semana. Situado 600 km a norte de Santiado, a capital do Chile, La Silla encontra-se a cerca de 2400 metros acima do nível do mar.
Não são apenas os telescópios que vivem neste local idílico: o pessoal que opera estas infraestruturas também desfruta deste lugar. Astrónomos, engenheiros e pessoal de apoio passam turnos de vários dias no observatório e os edifícios que vemos em primeiro plano permitem-lhes viver, trabalhar e descomprimir das condições inóspitas do deserto do Atacama. O edifício do centro tem quartos, uma cantina, um ginásio e uma sala de cinema, entre outras infraestruturas. À esquerda vemos os dormitórios onde os astrónomos visitantes se podem repousar depois de uma longa noite a observar o cosmos. O edifício branco comprido mesmo em baixo na imagem trata-se do Novo Edifício de Operações, onde são controlados o New Technology Telescope (NTT), o telescópio de 3,6 metros do ESO e o telescópio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros.
Estes telescópios, entre outros instalados na montanha, são importantes no mundo astronómico. Encarrapitado no pico mais alto encontra-se o telescópio de 3,6 metros, onde está instalado um dos mais importantes caçadores de exoplanetas do mundo inteiro: o instrumento HARPS (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher). Outro telescópio inovador é o NTT, o primeiro a aventurar-se no campo da ótica ativa: os espelhos dos telescópios grandes são tão pesados que se deformam sobre o seu próprio peso, mas com ótica ativa podemos ajustar a forma do espelho durante as observações, obtendo assim a máxima qualidade de imagem.
