Chuva de estrelas no deserto chileno (anotada)
A chuva de meteoros de Eta Aquariids, que teve o seu máximo no início de Maio deste ano, aqui capturada pelo astrofotógrafo Petr Horálek. A fotografia foi tirada perto de San Pedro de Atacama, uma vila chilena a cerca de 50 km do observatório do Chajnantor, local onde se encontram instaladas as infraestruturas astronómicas co-pertencentes ao ESO, APEX e ALMA. Os meteoros de Eta Aquariids são causados pelos restos do cometa de Halley e podemos vê-los nas brilhantes "setas" de luz que aparecem da fotografia. E não paramos por aqui: esta imagem está literalmente cheia até acima de fenómenos astronómicos.
O objeto luminoso que vemos baixo no céu é o planeta Vénus. Por cima dele, formando uma linha bastante satisfatória, temos vários planetas em conjunção. Logo por cima de Vénus vemos Júpiter, seguido de Marte, vermelho brilhante, e depois Saturno. Conjunções como esta são raras, ocorrendo frequentemente com intervalos de décadas. Os planetas traçam também a luz zodiacal, um brilho ténue em forma de pilar que se estende para cima em direção ao centro denso e brilhante de estrelas da Via Láctea, a nossa Galáxia.
A luz zodiacal é observada frequentemente em locais escuros, tais como os observatórios do ESO, logo após o pôr do Sol, ou antes do nascer do Sol, e trata-se de luz solar refletida por partículas de poeira que se encontram no plano do Sistema Solar. Esta poeira vem de asteroides e cometas que passam perto de nós e até de outros planetas interiores do Sistema Solar como, por exemplo, Marte. Nesta imagem vemos a luz zodiacal acompanhada de um pôr de Sol vermelho sobre as montanhas e vulcões que circundam o Chajnantor, o que nos dá um belo fundo para este céu noturno.
