Alimentando uma estrela bebé com um hamburger poeirento
Esta imagem curiosa pode parecer uma coleção de nós coloridos, mas na realidade trata-se de uma imagem de alta resolução de uma estrela recém nascida envolvida em poeira. Situada a apenas 1300 anos-luz de distância, na constelação de Orion, a estrela HH212 é muito jovem. A vida média de uma estrela de pequena massa como esta é de cerca de 100 mil milhões de anos, mas esta jovem estrela tem apenas 40 000 anos de idade — uma bebé em termos estelares.
Nos núcleos das vastas nuvens moleculares nas regiões de formação estelar, é travada uma batalha constante entre a gravidade e a pressão do gás e da poeira. Se a gravidade ganha, o gás e a poeira colapsam para formar um núcleo denso quente que eventualmente se acende, dando origem a uma protoestrela. O gás e a poeira restantes formam um disco em rotação em torno da estrela recém nascida e, em muitos sistemas estelares, estes discos dão eventualmente origem a planetas. Estes discos protoestelares extremamente jovens têm sido difíceis de observar devido ao seu tamanho relativamente pequeno, mas agora a extraordinária resolução do Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) torna possível compreender os detalhes intrincados da formação estelar e planetária.
Um olhar de perto à HH 212 revela um trilho escuro proeminente de poeira fria a atravessar o disco, colocado entre duas regiões mais brilhantes que são aquecidas pela protoestrela, resultando numa forma que faz lembrar um “hamburger cósmico”. Esta é a primeira vez que os astrónomos descobriram tal trilho de poeira nas fases mais iniciais da formação estelar, o que poderá fornecer-nos pistas sobre como se formam os sistemas planetários.
