Será um pássaro?...
Esta fotografia mostra uma paisagem estelar sobre o Observatório de La Silla do ESO. Combinaram-se várias fotografias individuais de modo a obter-se esta imagem fantástica, que captura o movimento de rotação da Terra, com as estrelas a darem origem a estes longos rastros em torno do pólo sul celeste à medida que a Terra roda.
A familiar cúpula prateada do telescópio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros pode ser vista em primeiro plano. Depois temos a cúpula branca do telescópio Schmidt de 1 metro do ESO e, ao fundo, o edifício rectangular do New Technology Telescope e as cúpulas duplas do telescópio de 3,6 metros do ESO, com o seu edíficio adjacente mais pequeno, do Telescópio Auxiliar Coudé, que já não se encontra em operação.
Mas o que são aqueles traços no céu? Será um pássaro? Será um avião? Sim, efectivamente, é um avião. Se olharmos com atenção podem ser vistos não apenas um mas três traços horizontais pertencentes a três aviões diferentes, deslocando-se da esquerda para a direita no céu. Estes traços não estão a rodar com as estrelas, por isso trata-se de algo claramente muito mais perto de nós... Na realidade, La Silla situa-se num local onde o tráfego aéreo é denso. Os traços no céu são aviões que viajam de Calama para Santiago.
