O cónico e icónico Licancabur de guarda ao Chajnantor
Esta impressionante imagem panorâmica mostra o Planalto do Chajnantor - onde está instalado o Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) - com o majestoso vulcão Licancabur como pano de fundo. Com o Licancabur de guarda, uma floresta gelada de penitentes amontoa-se no primeiro plano. Os penitentes são um curioso fenómeno natural, que se observa em regiões de elevada altitude. Consistem em finos picos de neve dura ou gelo, com gumes afiados apontados ao Sol, com alturas que vão de alguns centímetros até vários metros. O Licancabur, a uma altitude de 5920 metros, é o vulcão mais icónico da região de San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. A sua forma cónica faz com que seja facilmente reconhecido mesmo a grandes distâncias. Situa-se na região mais a sul da fronteira entre o Chile e a Bolívia. O vulcão possui na sua cratera um dos lagos mais altos do mundo. O lago tem atraído a atenção de biólogos interessados em estudar como é que organismos microscópicos podem aí sobreviver, uma vez que o ambiente é extremamente inóspito, possuindo intensa radiação ultravioleta, atmosfera fina e temperaturas baixas. As estratégias de sobrevivência da vida microscópica no Lago Licancabur podem até dar-nos uma ideia das possibilidades da existência de vida em Marte numa época primitiva.
