A Lua e o arco da Via Láctea
O Embaixador Fotográfico do ESO Stéphane Guisard capturou este extraordinário panorama a partir do local do ALMA, o Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, nos Andes chilenos. O planalto do Chajnantor extremamente seco e a 5000 metros de altitude, oferece o sítio perfeito para este telescópio de vanguarda, que estuda o Universo nos comprimentos de onda do milímetro e do submilímetro.
Várias antenas gigantes dominam o centro da imagem. Quando o ALMA estiver completo, contará com um total de 54 destas antenas com 12 metros de diâmetro. Por cima da rede de antenas, o arco da Via Láctea torna o fundo resplandecente. Quando este panorama foi fotografado, a Lua encontrava-se próximo do centro da Via Láctea no céu, o luar brilhando sobre as antenas. A Grande e a Pequena Nuvem de Magalhães, as maiores galáxias satélites anãs da Via Láctea, aparecem à esquerda como duas manchas luminosas no céu. Podemos também observar o rasto de um meteoro particularmente brilhante, próximo da Pequena Nuvem de Magalhães.
À direita, podem ser vistas algumas nas antenas mais pequenas de 7 metros do ALMA, doze das quais serão utilizadas para formar o Atacama Compact Array. Ainda mais à direita brilham as luzes do Edifício Técnico de Operações da Rede. E finalmente, por trás deste edifício está o escuro pico montanhoso do Cerro Chajnantor.
O Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), uma infraestrutura astronómica internacional, é uma parceria entre a Europa, a América do Norte e o Leste Asiático, em cooperação com a República do Chile. A construção e operação do ALMA é coordenada pelo ESO, em prol da Europa, pelo Observatório Nacional de Rádio Astronomia (NRAO), que é gerido, pela Associação de Universidades (AUI), em prol da América do Norte e pelo Observatório Astronómico Nacional do Japão (NAOJ), em prol do Leste Asiático. O Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) fornece uma liderança e direção unificadas na construção, comissionamento e operação do ALMA.
