O ALMA observa a novos comprimentos de onda
Testados com sucesso novos receptores que permitirão ao ALMA estudar o Universo primordial a comprimentos de onda ainda mais longos

Um novo conjunto de receptores instalados no Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA), do qual o ESO é um parceiro, viu a sua primeira luz. Os receptores de banda 1 recebem ondas rádio com comprimentos de onda entre 6 e 8,5 mm, batendo um novo recorde relativo aos maiores comprimentos de onda que o ALMA pode observar. Os astrónomos poderão, deste modo, observar o Universo primordial longínquo e explorar como é que os planetas se formam.
Para colectar a radiação emitida por fontes cósmicas num grande domínio de comprimentos de onda, as 66 antenas do ALMA, situadas no planalto do Chajnantor no Chile, foram equipadas com receptores sintonizados de forma muito precisa. Cada receptor é sensível a uma "banda" particular, ou domínio de comprimentos de onda do espectro electromagnético. Até recentemente, oito dos dez receptores planeados tinham sido já montados nas antenas, cobrindo no total uma janela entre 0,3 e 3,6 mm (bandas 10 a 3).
Agora, graças aos receptores de banda 1, o ALMA ficará equipado para observar a comprimentos de onda ainda mais longos, abrindo assim uma nova janela para explorar o Universo. Os cientistas esperam ser capazes de estudar gás na época de reionização do Universo, a altura em que as primeiras estrelas e galáxias se formaram. Adicionalmente, uma vez que é capaz de detectar grãos de poeira maiores que as outras bandas do ALMA, a banda 1 é ideal para observar o crescimento de tais grãos em discos que circundam as estrelas, permitindo aos astrónomos obter mais informações sobre como se formam os planetas.
O desenvolvimento dos receptores de banda 1 do ALMA foi liderado pelo Instituto de Astronomia e Astrofísica da Academia Sínica de Taiwan (ASIAA), acompanhado por uma equipa internacional composta por: Observatório Astronómico Nacional do Japão (NAOJ), Universidade do Chile, Observatório Nacional de Rádio Astronomia (NRAO), Instituto Herzberg de Astrofísica do Canadá e Instituto Nacional de Ciências e Tecnologia Chung-Shan da Taiwan. A Universidade do Chile esteve envolvida no projeto desde o início, ajudando a desenvolver e fabricar elementos ópticos, tais como lentes e antenas de chifre para os receptores de banda 1.
Recentemente, o painel do ALMA assinou um contrato para o desenvolvimento do conjunto final de receptores, os de banda 2, o qual será liderado por um consórcio de instituições europeias.

O ALMA é uma parceria entre o ESO (representando os seus estados membros), o NSF (EUA) e o NINS (Japão), juntamente com os NRC (Canadá), MOST e ASIAA (Taiwan), e KASI (República da Coreia), em cooperação com a República do Chile. O Observatório Conjunto ALMA é operado pelo ESO, AUI/NRAO e NAOJ.
O projeto de investigação da banda 1 foi financiado em Taiwan pela Academia Sínica e por bolsas do Ministério de Ciência e Tecnologia de Taiwan.
