Planeado para 2027 o início das operações científicas do Extremely Large Telescope do ESO

Iniciaram-se as preparações para retomar os trabalhos de construção do Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) do ESO no Cerro Armazones, no Chile, após uma interrupção devida à pandemia de COVID-19, que obrigou ao encerramento do local em meados de 2020. À medida que o trabalho de fabrico e de elementos de design do ELT ia prosseguindo de modo contínuo na Europa, a evolução deste projeto complexo e ambicioso, que irá revolucionar a astronomia moderna, foi sendo monitorizada durante todo o ano passado. Espera-se agora que o ELT do ESO faça as suas primeiras observações científicas em Setembro de 2027, cerca de meio ano após uma "primeira luz técnica do telescópio".
Nas últimas semanas, o consórcio italiano ACe (Cimolai, Astaldi), encarregado da construção da cúpula e da estrutura principal do telescópio, começou a preparação para poder retomar as suas atividades no local de construção do ELT, no deserto chileno do Atacama, dentro das medidas de saúde e segurança restritas estabelecidas pelas autoridades do país. Com este importante regresso ao trabalho no Chile, é agora possível estimar o primeiro impacto que a pandemia teve no cronograma da construção do ELT. A maior parte do trabalho que está a ser levado a cabo na Europa continuou apesar da situação pandémica adversa e variável que se verifica desde o início de 2020, no entanto, o cronograma de construção do telescópio sofreu um atraso que se estima ser de cerca de ano e meio.
Quando estiver construído, o ELT será o maior telescópio óptico do mundo, colectando mais radiação do que todos os telescópios da classe dos 8-10 metros juntos, existentes atualmente à superfície no planeta. Com o seu espelho primário de 39 metros e um design único de cinco espelhos, aos quais se junta uma tecnologia de vanguarda pensada para corrigir os efeitos de distorção da atmosfera, o telescópio obterá imagens 15 vezes mais nítidas do que as obtidas com o Telescópio Espacial Hubble. O ELT será usado para fazer avançar as fronteiras científicas de áreas como a descoberta de exoplanetas habitáveis, a formação galáctica ou o estudo da energia e matéria escuras.
As capacidades científicas do ELT do ESO não serão afectadas de modo algum por este novo cronograma de construção e, assim que começar as suas operações científicas, o ELT irá investigar as maiores questões astronómicas da nossa era e fazer descobertas atualmente inimagináveis.
