Washing an M1 segment before coating it

ESO optical technician Jaime González carefully washes the surface of one of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT)’s primary mirror segments before it undergoes the coating process at Paranal Observatory. Washing the segment may be necessary to remove any imperfections before the coating is applied. A dedicated cleaning unit, currently being finalised, will perform this task in the future.
