ESO at the Big Science Business Forum 2020

4 lutego 2020

The Big Science Business Forum 2020 (BSBF2020) is the second such event, intended as a one-stop-shop where European businesses and other stakeholders can learn about future investments and procurements on the part of Europe’s Big Science organisations. The event is organised by an International Organising Committee consisting of 10 Big Science organisations, ESO being one of them. The event will be hosted by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and CIEMAT - Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas. It takes place from 6 to 9 October 2020 in Granada, Spain.

Update 8 October 2020: Given the current situation, the BSBF2020 International Organising Committee (IOC) has decided to postpone the BSBF2020 event to 28 September - 1 October 2021. In the meantime, several webinars are being organised.

Big Science is a term that encapsulates the way in which scientific progress increasingly relies on large-scale projects, often funded by national governments or groups of governments, leading to increasingly collaborative research and global, scientific projects. It relies on businesses large and small from all over the world, in areas ranging from cryogenics, superconductors, materials and electronics — as well as groundbreaking astronomical technologies.

1000 participants are expected to attend, mainly from European businesses and organisations planning to engage in the Big Science market. Dedicated parallel sessions, one-on-one meetings and an exhibition will give participants an opportunity to:

  • Learn about business opportunities in the coming years, across a wide range of business areas.
  • Meet representatives from Europe’s Big Science organisations and their key suppliers.
  • Partake in discussions related to the opportunities and challenges of the Big Science market.
  • Network and establish partnerships via business-to-business meetings, business-to-customer meetings, and in the open exhibition area.
  • Get insight into procurement rules, intellectual property rights, technology transfer and how businesses can interact with the Big Science market.
  • See detailed presentations on future procurements.

ESO is a prominent example of Big Science. It is a partner in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the world's largest ground-based facility for observations in the millimeter/submillimeter regime. ESO’s flagship Very Large Telescope (VLT) is the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory, and ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction, is on course to be the world’s biggest eye on the sky.

Speakers from ESO will deliver a total of 9 presentations at BSBF2020, including a keynote address from ESO’s Director General, Xavier Barcons.

The following organisations are members of the International Organising Committee and have been involved in setting up the forum: The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN),  European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), European Space Agency (ESA), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the European Spallation Source (ESS), the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), the European X-Ray Free Electron Laser Facility (European XFEL), Facility for Antriproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR), Fusion for Energy (F4E), Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).
