VLT Mirror Transport

22 December 1997

We publish here as first examples three clips from the transport of the first VLT 8.2-m Zerodur mirror (M1) from the port of Antofagasta to the Paranal Observatory, as obtained by the ESO EPR Video Team.

Please refer also to the twelve high-quality photographic images of this event In addition, the first (digital) photo from the inspection of the mirror after arrival is now available. It shows the mirror in its box on December 18, 1997, now within the Mirror Maintenance Building (MMB), and moments after the cover had been removed. During the ensuing careful inspection of the complete mirror surface, no damage was detected.

These sequences may be reproduced, if credit is given to the European Southern Observatory. More extensive extracts from the available video coverage, suitable for transmission and in full professional quality (Betacam, etc.), may be obtained by TV companies upon request; please contact the ESO EPR Department for more details.
