Sterrenhoop toont zijn kleurenpracht op 80 miljoen pixels tellende ESO-opname

De Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht (ESO) heeft een prachtige afbeelding van tachtig miljoen pixels vrijgegeven van de sterrenhoop RCW 38. De opname is gemaakt met ESO’s Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) in de Atacama-woestijn in Chili.

 

RCW 38 is een stellaire kraamkamer in het sterrenbeeld Vela (Zeilen) op zo’n 5500 lichtjaar van ons vandaan. Met zijn heldere slierten en krullen is deze geboorteplaats van sterren niet bang om met zijn kleuren te pronken. Van heldere roze gaswolken tot jonge sterren in allerlei kleuren, deze foto heeft het allemaal.

Vergeleken met onze zon, die ongeveer 4,6 miljard jaar oud is en zich in een stabiele levensfase bevindt, zijn de sterren in RCW 38 nog erg jong. RCW 38 is minder dan een miljoen jaar oud en bevat zo’n tweeduizend sterren, die dit psychedelische landschap hebben geschapen. De jonge sterrenhoop bruist van de activiteit en is daarom een interessant doelwit voor astronomische waarnemingen.

Sterrenhopen zijn een soort reusachtige snelkookpannen die alle ingrediënten voor het bereiden van sterren bevatten: dichte gaswolken en ondoorzichtige klonten kosmisch stof. Als dit mengsel van gas en stof onder invloed van zijn eigen zwaartekracht samentrekt, ontstaat er een nieuwe ster.

Door de intense straling van deze pasgeboren sterren gaat het gas dat de sterrenhoop omhult gloeien, waardoor de roze tinten ontstaan die op deze foto van RCW 38 te zien zijn. Het is werkelijk een spectaculair schouwspel, maar in zichtbaar licht blijven veel sterren in de sterrenhoop voor ons verborgen, omdat ze in stof zijn gehuld.

De VISTA-telescoop van de ESO-sterrenwacht op Paranal weet daar wel raad mee: zijn VIRCAM-camera neemt infrarood licht waar dat – in tegenstelling tot zichtbaar licht – bijna niet door stof wordt gehinderd. Zo wordt de ware kleurenpracht van RCW 38 zichtbaar. Plotseling zien we ook jonge sterren in stofrijke cocons, of koude ‘mislukte’ sterren die bruine dwergen worden genoemd.

Deze infraroodopname is gemaakt in het kader van de VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) survey, die de meest detailrijke infraroodkaart van ons eigen Melkwegstelsel heeft opgeleverd die ooit is gemaakt. Surveys als deze onthullen het bestaan van nog onbekende astronomische objecten of laten al bekende objecten in een ander licht zien.

Nadat deze foto was gemaakt, is VISTA’s trouwe VIRCAM-camera, die vanaf 2008 een indrukwekkend aantal surveys heeft uitgevoerd, met pensioen gegaan. Later dit jaar krijgt de telescoop een gloednieuw instrument – 4MOST – dat voor een groot hemelgebied de spectra van 2400 objecten tegelijk vastlegt. Na deze ‘wedergeboorte’ ziet de toekomst van VISTA er weer rooskleurig uit.
