De rookachtige, roze kern van de Omeganevel

Deze nieuwe opname van de Omeganevel, gemaakt met ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), behoort tot de scherpste die ooit vanaf de aarde zijn gemaakt. De foto geeft een buitengewoon detailrijk beeld van de rokerige, roze gekleurde centrale delen van dit beroemde stervormingsgebied, dat een kosmisch landschap van gaswolken, stof en pasgeboren sterren is.
Het kleurrijke gas en donkere stof in de Omeganevel dient als bouwmateriaal voor de vorming van een nieuwe generatie sterren. De jongste sterren in dit specifieke deel van de nevel – oogverblindend helder en blauwwit stralend – lichten het geheel op. De rookachtige slierten stof in de nevel steken donker af tegen het gloeiende gas. De overwegend rode tinten van dit wolkachtige uitspansel zijn het gevolg van waterstofgas dat onder invloed van de intense ultraviolette straling van de hete, jonge sterren tot stralen is gebracht.
De Omeganevel heeft, afhankelijk van de waarnemer en wat deze meende te zien, allerlei verschillende namen gekregen, zoals ‘Zwaannevel’, ‘Hoefijzernevel’ en zelfs ‘Kreeftnevel’. Het object staat ook te boek als Messier 17 (M17) en NGC 6618. De nevel bevindt zich op een afstand van ongeveer 6500 lichtjaar in het sterrenbeeld Boogschutter. Dit heldere complex van gas en stof, dat tot de jongste en meest actieve stervormingsgebieden in de Melkweg behoort, is een populair doelwit voor astronomen.
De opname is gemaakt met het instrument FORS (FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph) van Antu, een van de vier grote unit-telescopen van de VLT. De scherpte van de opname is niet alleen te danken aan de grote omvang van de telescoop, maar ook aan de, ondanks lichte bewolking, uitzonderlijk stabiele lucht tijdens de opname [1]. Hierdoor behoort deze nieuwe foto tot de scherpste die ooit vanaf de aarde van dit deel van de Omeganevel zijn gemaakt.
Deze foto is een van de eerste die in het kader van het ESO Cosmic Gems-programma [2] zijn gemaakt.

[1] De ‘seeing’ – een term die astronomen gebruiken om de verstorende effecten van de aardatmosfeer te meten – ten tijde van deze opname was zeer goed. Vaak wordt de seeing uitgedrukt in de schijnbare diameter die een ster door een telescoop vertoont. In dit geval bedroeg die diameter 0,45 boogseconde, wat betekent dat het waargenomen object bijna niet twinkelde of door de luchtonrust werd vervaagd.
[2] ESO’s Cosmic Gems-programma is een initiatief waarbij ESO-telescopen worden ingezet om opnamen te maken van interessante, intrigerende of gewoon aantrekkelijke objecten die geschikt zijn voor educatieve doeleinden en publieksvoorlichting. Het programma maakt gebruik van kleine hoeveelheden waarnemingstijd en van de momenten dat de telescopen niet voor wetenschappelijke waarnemingen worden gebruikt. Alle gegevens worden via ESO’s wetenschappelijke archief ook beschikbaar gesteld aan astronomen.

Het jaar 2012 staat in het teken van de vijftigste verjaardag van de oprichting van de Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht (ESO). ESO is de belangrijkste intergouvernementele astronomische organisatie in Europa en de meest productieve sterrenwacht ter wereld. Zij wordt ondersteund door vijftien landen: België, Brazilië, Denemarken, Duitsland, Finland, Frankrijk, Italië, Nederland, Oostenrijk, Portugal, Spanje, Tsjechië, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Zweden en Zwitserland. ESO voert een ambitieus programma uit, gericht op het ontwerpen, bouwen en beheren van grote sterrenwachten die astronomen in staat stellen om belangrijke wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen te doen. Ook speelt ESO een leidende rol bij het bevorderen en organiseren van samenwerking op astronomisch gebied. ESO beheert drie waarnemingslocaties van wereldklasse in Chili: La Silla, Paranal en Chajnantor. Op Paranal staan ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), de meest geavanceerde optische sterrenwacht ter wereld, en twee surveytelescopen: VISTA werkt in het infrarood en is de grootste surveytelescoop ter wereld en de VLT Survey Telescope is de grootste telescoop die uitsluitend is ontworpen om de hemel in zichtbaar licht in kaart te brengen. ESO is ook de Europese partner van de revolutionaire telescoop ALMA, het grootste astronomische project van dit moment. Daarnaast bereidt ESO momenteel de bouw voor van de Europese Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope (E-ELT), een telescoop van de 40-meterklasse die ‘het grootste oog op de hemel’ ter wereld zal worden.
