Brazilië wordt lid van de Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht

De federatieve republiek Brazilië heeft gisteren het formele document getekend waarmee de weg wordt geplaveid naar het lidmaatschap van de Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht (ESO). Brazilië zal na ratificatie het vijftiende land zijn dat lid is van ESO en het eerste van buiten Europa.
Op 29 december 2010 tekenden de Braziliaanse minister van Wetenschap en Technologie Sergio Machado Rezende en ESO directeur-generaal Tim de Zeeuw de formele toetredingsovereenkomst voor het ESO-lidmaatschap. Brazilië wordt de vijftiende lidstaat en de eerste van buiten Europa. Omdat de overeenkomst de toetreding tot een internationaal verdrag betekent, moet het ter ratificatie naar het Brziliaanse parlement [1]. De ondertekening vond plaats na de unanieme goedkeuring door de ESO Council op een buitengewone vergadering op 21 december 2010.
“Het lidmaatschap van ESO zal een nieuwe impuls geven aan de ontwikkeling van wetenschap, technologie en innovatie in Brazilië, als onderdeel van de inspanning van onze regering om het land te blijven ontwikkelen op deze gebieden”, zegt Rezende.
De Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht heeft een lange geschiedenis van succesvolle betrokkenheid bij Zuid-Amerika, sinds Chili in 1963 werd gekozen als de beste locatie voor waarnemingen. Maar tot nu toe was geen enkel niet-Europees land toegetreden tot ESO.
“Het lidmaatschap van Brazilië zal de levendige Braziliaanse astronomische gemeenschap volledige toegang geven tot het meest productieve observatorium ter wereld en de mogelijkheden openen voor de Braziilaanse high-tech industrie om bij te dragen aan de European Extremely Large Telescope. Het zal ook nieuwe hulpbronnen en vaardigheden de organisatie binnen brengen, precies op het goede moment om een belangrijke bijdrage te leveren aan dit boeiende project”, voegt ESO directeur-generaal Tim de Zeeuw daaraan toe.
De ontwerpfase van de European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is onlangs voltooid en een internationaal panel van onafhankelijke experts heeft het ontwerp op alle onderdelen kritisch beoordeeld. Het panel concludeert dat het E-ELT-project technisch klaar is om de constructiefase in te gaan. De start van de bouw van de E-ELT staat gepland voor 2011, en als het observatorium in het volgende decennium operationeel is, zullen Europese, Braziliaanse en Chileense astronomen toegang hebben tot deze gigantische telescoop.
De voorzitter van de ESO Council, Laurent Vigroux, concludeert: “Astronomen in Brazilië zullen profiteren van de samenwerking met de Europese collega’s en van de waarneemtijd die zij zullen krijgen op ESO’s wereldklasse-observatoria op La Silla, Paranal en ALMA, dat nu gebouwd wordt met internationale partners.
