Deze opname van de Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) toont V1247 Orionis, een jonge, hete ster omgeven door een dynamische ring van gas en stof, een zogeheten circumstellaire schijf. De schijf die hier te zien is, bestaat uit twee delen: een duidelijke centrale ring van materie en een iele sikkelvormige structuur wat verder weg.
Het gebied tussen de ring en de sikkel, zichtbaar als een donkere strook, wordt vermoedelijk veroorzaakt door een jonge planeet die zich een weg doorheen de schijf hakt. Doordat de planeet om zijn moederster heen draait, ontstaat er een hoge druk aan beide zijden van zijn baan, net zoals een schip boeggolven maakt terwijl het door het water snijdt. Deze gebieden met een hoge druk kunnen een beschermende barrière vormen rond regio’s waar planeetvorming plaatsvindt; stofdeeltjes komen er gedurende miljoenen jaren in vast te zitten, wat hen de tijd en ruimte geeft om samen te klonteren en te groeien.
De voortreffelijke resolutie van ALMA stelt astronomen voor het eerst in staat om de complexe structuur van een dergelijke stofopnemende vortex te onderzoeken. De opname onthult niet enkel de sikkelvormige ‘stofval’ aan de buitenrand van de donkere strook, maar ook gebieden met overtollig stof binnenin de ring, een mogelijke aanwijzing voor een tweede stofval die zich aan de binnenzijde van de omloopbaan van de potentiële planeet gevormd heeft. Dit bevestigt de voorspelling van eerdere computersimulaties.
De stofval is een mogelijke oplossing voor een gigantisch struikelblok in huidige theorieën over planeetvorming, die voorspellen dat deeltjes eigenlijk naar de centrale ster toe zouden moeten drijven en op die manier vernietigd worden vooraleer ze de tijd krijgen om tot planetesimalen uit te groeien (het radiale driftprobleem).
