Nieuw inzicht in stofschijven
Astronomen hebben koolmonoxide (CO) gedetecteerd in de stofschijf rond een F-type ster. Ze gebruikten hiervoor 39 van de 66 antennes van de Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), op 5000 meter hoogte op het Chajnantor-plateau in de Chileense Andes.
Koolmonoxide is na moleculair waterstof het meest voorkomende molecuul in de interstellaire ruimte. Toch is het pas de eerste keer dat CO gedetecteerd is rond een ster van het F-type. De ster, HD 181327, is lid van de Beta Pictoris-groep, op bijna 170 lichtjaar van de aarde.
Tot nu toe was CO alleen nog maar gedetecteerd rond enkele A-type sterren. Die zijn een stuk zwaarder en ze stralen meer dan HD 181327. Dankzij het goede ruimtelijk onderscheidende vermogen en de gevoeligheid van het ALMA-observatorium konden de astronomen nu de 'rookring' en de CO-dichtheid in kaart brengen.
Het onderzoek naar stofschijven is een manier om meer te weten te komen over planeetvorming en planeetsystemen. Het CO-gas is recent geproduceerd en bevindt zich bij de stofdeeltjes in de puinschijf. Het gas wordt mogelijk continu nieuw aangevoerd dankzij vernietigende botsingen van ijsachtige planetesimalen.
Overigens komt de CO-samenstelling van de ijsachtige planetesimalen in de schijf overeen met de kometen in ons zonnestelsel. Dit suggereert dat ijsachtige kometen vaak voorkomen rond sterren die op onze zon lijken. Als dat zo is, dan zouden aardachtige exoplaneten levensvatbaarder zijn dan gedacht.
De resultaten van het onderzoek zijn gepubliceerd in het tijdschrift Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society onder de titel “Exocometary gas in the HD 181327 debris ring” by S. Marino et al.
