Is het een vogel..?
Wat je hier ziet is een wervelende show van sterren boven de ESO-sterrenwacht op La
Silla. Een lange reeks van samengevoegde beelden maakt dat de draaiende beweging van de
aarde zichtbaar wordt doordat de sterren hun baan rond de zuidelijke hemelpool
markeren.
Op de voorgrond zie je de vertrouwde zilveren koepel van de MPG/ESO 2,2-meter
telescoop, daarnaast de witte koepel van de ESO 1-meter Schmidt-telescoop en het
rechthoekige gebouw van de New Technology Telescope. Daarachter zijn nog de
twee koepels van de 3,6-meter telescoop zichtbaar, met de aangrenzende kleinere -en inmiddels
buiten gebruik gestelde- Coudé Auxiliary Telescope.
Maar wat zijn die rechte strepen in de lucht? Is het een vogel? Is het een vliegtuig?
Eh... ja, het is inderdaad een vliegtuig en als je heel goed kijkt zie je niet één maar
drie lichtpaden, van drie afzonderlijke vliegtuigen, van links naar rechts door het
beeld lopen. Ze draaien niet met de sterren mee dus moeten ze een beetje dichter bij
huis zijn. Het zijn dan ook vliegtuigen die de vrij drukke vliegroute van van Calama
naar Santiago volgen, die dicht langs La Silla loopt.
Deze opname is gemaakt door ESO-foto-ambassadeur Alexandre Santerne die - als hij niet
dit soort prachtige foto's maakt - de hele wereld afreist om onderzoek te doen naar
exoplaneten.
