Galactische chromodynamica
Deze kleurrijke afbeelding lijkt op een abstract kunstwerk of modern glas-in-loodraam. In werkelijkheid is dit een ongewone foto van een sterrenstelsel die is genomen met het MUSE-instrument op ESO’s Very Large Telescope.
Kleuren in sterrenkundige foto’s zijn gewoonlijk vergelijkbaar met de werkelijke kleuren van een object, maar dit is nu niet het geval. De kleuren op deze foto geven de beweging van de sterren weer die ontstaan in het gigantische, elliptische sterrenstelsel Messier 87. Dit is een van de helderste sterrenstelsels in het Virgocluster dat op 50 miljoen lichtjaar afstand staat.
De rode kleur geeft aan dat de sterren in dat deel van het object van ons af bewegen. De blauwe kleur betekent dat ze naar ons toe komen. Groen en geel zitten daar tussenin.
Op deze nieuwe kaart van Messier 87 door MUSE zijn deze bewegingen beter te zien dan ooit. Hij onthult de langzame rotatie van dit zware object - het deel linksboven (in het blauw) beweegt zich naar ons toe en het deel rechtsonder (in het rood) beweegt zich van ons af. De kaart legt ook een paar onverwachte eigenschappen bloot zoals de overloop van kleuren in het midden van de afbeelding. Het onderste, blauw gekleurde deel loopt over in een oranje bovendeel. Dit suggereert dat Messier 87 een onstuimiger verleden heeft dan gedacht, en misschien is ontstaan uit het samensmelten van meerdere sterrenstelsels.
Een onderzoeksartikel dat deze waarnemingen beschrijft is gepubliceerd in het tijdschrift Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Het onderzoek is geleid door ESO Head of the Office for Science Eric Emsellem.
