Colourful arc

The landscape around ESO's Paranal Residencia is usually barren and Earth-toned. So when a streak of colour fills the Chilean sky, it lights up the whole scene. Here, we see an uncommon natural phenomenon known as a circumhorizontal arc, where water droplets are refracting the light from the Sun and creating a spectrum of colours high in the sky.
