22 december 2016: De interesse voor het naburige stersysteem Alpha Centauri is groot sedert de recente ontdekking van een planeet met ongeveer dezelfde massa als de aarde, bekend als Proxima b, die om de derde ster van het systeem heen draait – de ster die het dichtst bij onze zon staat – Proxima Centauri. Hoewel het grotere tweetal van het systeem, Alpha Centauri A en B, een eigenbeweging aan de hemel lijken te hebben die vergelijkbaar is met die van de kleinere, zwakkere Proxima Centauri was het onmogelijk aan te tonen dat de drie sterren werkelijk een drievoudig stersysteem vormen die door zwaartekracht aangetrokken worden. Drie astronomen, Pierre Kervella, Frédéric Thévenin en Christophe Lovis, zijn nu tot de conclusie gekomen dat de drie sterren inderdaad één systeem vormen, samengehouden door onderlinge zwaartekracht. 19 december 2016: Great Websites for Kids (GWS) van de Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) heeft Space Scoop uitgekozen als een van de tien beste websites voor kinderen tot de leeftijd van 14 jaar. ALSC is een afdeling van de American Library Association (ALA) en de selectie van de Great Websites for Kids door het GWS-comité vindt drie keer per jaar plaats. ESO is verheugd één van de onderzoeksinstituten te zijn die samen met ESA, NASA Chandra, Las Cumbres Observatory en anderen content verstrekken voor Space Scoop. De Space Scoop-website werd een jaar geleden opgestart als onderdeel van de door de Europese Commissie gefinancierde projecten Universe Awareness en Space Awareness. Elke week brengt de website het recentste astronomische nieuws in een vorm die geschikt is voor kinderen en hun leerkrachten, om te onderrichten en te inspireren. 15 december 2016: Gedurende bijna acht jaar heeft de VIsible MultiObject Spectrograph (VIMOS) op ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chili in twee gebieden aan de zuidelijke hemel een driedimensionale kaart van sterrenstelsels samengesteld. Het opmeten van de spectra van meer dan 90.000 verafgelegen sterrenstelsels nam in totaal 440 uur observatietijd in beslag. Hierdoor ontstond een kaart die een hemelgebied van 24 vierkante graden beslaat, wat overeenkomt met een afstand toen het heelal ongeveer half zo oud was als nu. [1] In 2013 berichtte ESO dat het internationale astronomenteam van de VIMOS Public Extragalactic Survey (VIPERS) gegevens verzameld had van ongeveer 60% van het totaal te observeren aantal sterrenstelsels. Nu alle waarnemingen voltooid zijn, vormt dit het grootste roodverschuivingsonderzoek ooit uitgevoerd met ESO telescopen [2] en het biedt een beeld van structuren in het vroegere heelal in nooit eerder voorgekomen detail en ruimtelijke omvang. 15 december 2016: De 21ste uitgave van CAPjournal (Communicating Astronomy with the public) is verschenen! In deze uitgave stellen onze medewerkers een zomerprogramma astronomie voor middelbare scholieren voor; evalueren een online cursus astronomie; geven essentiële tips over hoe je met succes een persbericht schrijft; en beschrijven astronomiecommunicatie in zijn meest informele vorm – een steeds uitgebreider programma van astronomie-evenementen die in bars gehouden worden. Dit allemaal en meer vind je in dit gratis, peer-reviewed tijdschrift voor communicatieverantwoordelijken inzake astronomie – nu beschikbaar als download. Dit product is eveneens beschikbaar in de ESO shop.

6 december 2016: De recentste uitgave van het gratis tijdschrift Science in School is nu online en in gedrukte vorm beschikbaar. Dit Europese tijdschrift voor leerkrachten wetenschappen biedt in elke uitgave inspirerende artikelen en doe-activiteiten voor leerlingen. Het beoogt het bevorderen van het wetenschappelijk onderwijs door de communicatie tussen leerkrachten, wetenschappers en iedereen die betrokken is in het wetenschappelijk onderwijs in Europa te stimuleren. Enkele van de hoogtepunten in deze uitgave zijn: Vermenging van zintuigen: synesthesie begrijpen; Onder druk: de rol van de aardmantel in ons klimaat; een interview met Andy Brunning, het meesterbrein achter Compound Interest; en een verslag over de European CanSat competition 2016. 29 november 2016: De prestigieuze De Zeeuw-Van Dishoeck-afstudeerprijs voor astronomie wordt elk jaar toegewezen aan een Nederlandse student voor het beste masterproefschrift over astronomie. De prijs heeft als doel jong talent op het gebied van astronomie te stimuleren; de winnaar krijgt een certificaat en een geldbedrag van 3.000 euro. Dit jaar wordt de prijs uitgereikt aan Jakob van den Eijnden van de Universiteit Amsterdam voor zijn proefschrift met de titel "Probing the short-timescale evolution of quasi-periodic oscillations". De prijs, vernoemd naar Tim De Zeeuw, directeur-generaal van ESO en Ewine van Dishoeck, professor theoretische sterrenkunde en professor moleculaire astrofysica bij de Universiteit Leiden, wordt toegekend door de Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW).

29 november 2016: Door de wolkeloze Chileense hemel zweven lijkt misschien iets uit een droom, maar deze ESOcast maakt dit mogelijk. Verbluffende luchtopnamen van de ESO-faciliteiten in Chili bieden een nieuw perspectief op de productiefste astronomische sterrenwachten ter wereld, en tonen hun technische vernuft en de spectaculaire omgeving vanuit een geheel nieuw gezichtspunt. De tocht brengt ons langs de ESO-sterrenwachten La Silla, Paranal, Chajnantor en ook Cerro Armazones —de site voor de toekomstige European Extremely Large Telescope. De ijle lucht op de extreme hoogte van deze sterrenwachten zorgt voor prachtige, kristalheldere uitzichten over de Atacama-woestijn, vele kilometers in het rond. Natuurlijk bevinden deze telescopen zich daar vanwege de schitterende show die de Chileense hemel bijna iedere nacht biedt. 14 november 2016: De ceremonie voor de prijsuitreiking van de Photo Nightscape Awards 2016 — georganiseerd door de Association Française d'Astronomie — vond plaats op 12 november in de Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Parijs. Thierry Botti, afgevaardigde van ESO Science Outreach Network in Frankrijk, was aanwezig op de ceremonie om de deelnemers te feliciteren en om in naam van ESO de hoofdprijs uit te reiken: een reis naar de Very Large Telescope in Chili. Meer dan 400 foto's en timelapse-opnamen uit meer dan 45 landen werden dit jaar voor de wedstrijd ingediend. Uit deze inzendingen werden acht winnaars gekozen. Lars Lindberg Christensen, diensthoofd van de afdeling educatie en public outreach van ESO was een van de juryleden die de winnaars selecteerden. 9 november 2016: Op 29 en 30 mei 2017 geeft ESO een workshop met de titel "Public Awareness of Research Infrastructures II — Communicating the Importance of Science to Society". De workshop, samen georganiseerd door de Association of European-level Research Infrastructure Facilities (ERF-AISBL), het Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) en het EIROforum, vindt plaats in het hoofdkwartier van ESO in Garching bei München in Duitsland. Het belang van wetenschap in de maatschappij mag niet onderschat worden en doeltreffende communicatie tussen wetenschappers en het grote publiek speelt een belangrijke rol. Inspanningen om de resultaten van spannende en baanbrekende wetenschap te delen met een breed publiek oogstten veel succes, wat resulteert in een nieuwsgieriger en nog meer betrokken publiek. De workshop zal een praktijkgericht forum zijn voor communicatieverantwoordelijken en PR-medewerkers van belangrijke onderzoeksinstellingen en zal hen de gelegenheid bieden hun ervaring en expertise te delen. 4 november 2016: Meer dan 180 videosollicitaties uit 25 landen werden ingediend voor het sterrenkundekamp 2016 van ESO en de winnaars van de beurzen aangeboden door ESO en de nationale partners werden geselecteerd. Het niveau van de sollicitaties was dit jaar extreem hoog, met een aantal zeer enthousiaste toekomstige wetenschappers en ingenieurs die dit jaar graag een plaatsje zouden bemachtigen op het sterrenkundekamp. ESO is verheugd aan te kondigen dat Lucia Mendes Cucchieri uit Brazilië de winnaar is van de ESO-beurs. De beurs dekt de volledige kosten van het kamp en de reis ernaartoe voor de leerling. 28 oktober 2016: A major milestone has been reached in the project to transform Unit Telescope 4 (Yepun) of ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) into a fully adaptive telescope, with the installation of a deformable secondary mirror on the telescope. Adaptive Optics systems compensate for the blurring effect of the Earth’s atmosphere that degrades the sharpness of images that can be obtained with a telescope — even a very large and sophisticated one like the VLT. The installation of the new Adaptive Optics Facility (AOF) as an integral part of UT4 will enable the telescope to obtain even sharper images. The deformable secondary mirror consists of a 1.96 mm-thick flexible mirror sitting on a mount that holds 1170 actuators which change the shape of the mirror to correct for the effect of turbulence in the atmosphere. 27 oktober 2016: In March 2016, the “Fulldome Expedition” gathered breathtaking visuals for the forthcoming ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre, which will open in late 2017 in Garching near Munich, Germany. The team, composed of photographer Yuri Beletsky, ESO photo ambassadors Petr Horalek and Babak Tafreshi — accompanied by the pioneer of ultrafast planetarium cinematography, Theofanis Matsopoulos — ventured out to ESO’s world-leading observatories in Chile’s Atacama desert. This ESOcast tells the story of their visit and shares some of the remarkable images they brought back. The Fulldome Expedition brought back a wide range of beautiful visuals, having captured thousands of stills and videos of the crystal clear Chilean night sky. 25 oktober 2016: High up in the Atacama Desert in Chile, ESO’s Paranal Observatory has welcomed a very special guest. Former President of Finland, Tarja Halonen, visited the Paranal facilities, including the Very Large Telescope (VLT), on 21 and 22 October 2016. Prior to that, on 20 October, Ms. Halonen paid a visit to the Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO), after delivering a talk at CEPAL (the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean) on the global situation of women in the 21st Century. During her visit to the JAO she met women scientists and engineers working at ALMA and ESO and was given a presentation about the ALMA residence, which is nearing completion and is based on a design by Finnish architects. Finland became the eleventh member state of the European Southern Observatory in 2004, during Ms. Halonen’s presidency. 20 oktober 2016: A very rare gravitational lensing event, set to occur in 2028, has been predicted by a team of French astronomers led by Pierre Kervella of the CNRS/Universidad de Chile. It will provide an ideal opportunity to look for evidence of a planet around a nearby star. Using both new and archive data obtained with a range of ESO telescopes [1], the team has predicted the trajectories of the fast-moving stellar duo known as the Alpha Centauri A and B, with negligible error. That has allowed them to predict every close alignment until 2050 between the Alpha Centauri pair and the stars which lie close to them on the sky — but which are in fact a great deal further away in space [2]. 20 oktober 2016: New high-definition cameras have been installed at ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) and at the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). They will provide improved 24/7 interactive views of these two flagship observatories in Chile and will complement ESO’s suite of existing live webcam views.. The new cameras provide a live 360-degree view of the activities at the observatories throughout the year and can be used interactively to explore the site in all directions in exquisite detail. In addition, there are several high-resolution “points of interest”, which include a dedicated feed of the Cerro Armazones mountain in Chile — the site of the new European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) — to document the construction of the world’s largest optical telescope, scheduled for completion in 2024. 17 oktober 2016: For the first time, starlight from one of the Unit Telescopes (UT) that make up ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) has been successfully channelled 60 metres along a tunnel leading to a new focus in the underground laboratory beneath the VLT platform. When the system is fully operational, light from all four UTs will be brought to this “convergence point”, where the ESPRESSO (Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanet and Stable Spectroscopic Observations) high resolution spectrograph will be placed in 2017, collecting and analysing the combined light from the individual telescopes. In this way, the UTs, each of which has a diameter of 8 metres, will together equal the light collecting power of a telescope with a diameter of 16 metres. 17 oktober 2016: In May 2014 Olivier Chesneau, one of the most active and prolific members of the optical interferometry community, passed away at the age of 41. To honour his work in this field, his home institute, the Laboratoire J.-L. Lagrange at the Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur in France and ESO established a prize in his memory. The prize is awarded biennially — the first time was in 2015 — for the best thesis completed by a PhD student in the past two calendar years in the field of high angular resolution optical astronomy at a European institution. This includes adaptive optics, optical interferometry and similar techniques. 17 oktober 2016: ESO, the world’s most productive ground-based observatory, will open its doors to the public on Saturday 22 October 2016 between 11:00 and 18:00 CEST. The event will be held at ESO’s Headquarters in Garching, near Munich, Germany. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the world of ESO first hand by taking part in many different activities. The programme of activities for the day is now available. Our Open House Day is part of the Tag der offenen Tür that is taking place across the Garching research campus, as well as at several other local institutes. 11 oktober 2016: Nine years ago, ESO uploaded its first video to YouTube, about the discovery of the first Earth-like world in the habitable zone of a distant star. It seems fitting then that a recent set of videos about the groundbreaking discovery of another Earth-like world, this time around our closest stellar neighbour Proxima Centauri, have helped boost the ESO channel’s view count to five million. Since 2007, nearly 500 videos have been uploaded to the channel, all sharing incredible astronomical news, discoveries and observations with the world, helping to spread knowledge about our Universe and inspire people. 87 ESOcasts, hundreds of interviews and observations, and countless stunning artists’ renderings have contributed to this milestone.
