ALMA and the Moon

Footage of another night ending on the Chajnantor plateau, home of ALMA (the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array). The crescent moon sets behind some of ALMA's 66 antennas. Together they combine to form the world's highest observatory, which focuses on observing "cooler" wavelengths of light coming from distant objects, like galaxies, or closer objects that are colder than stars, such as gas and dust. It can probe the Universe for specific molecules, exploring the building blocks of stars and planets, as well as looking back in time to the early history of our Universe.
