Una rosetta per il VLT
Questa immagine colorata mostra una parte della Nebulosa Rosetta nella costellazione di Monoceros (L'unicorno). È una nebulosa a emissione, composta da nuvole di gas che vengono fatte brillare dalla radiazione emanata dalle stelle all'interno. La Nebulosa Rosetta è un esempio abbastanza tipico di una nebulosa a emissione, ma tipica non significa noiosa! Le nebulose sono tra gli oggetti celesti più belli là fuori e, spesso, si mostrano in modo spettacolare nelle immagini scattate da telescopi astronomici, come si vede qui.
Nelle nebulose come questa, gas e polvere si combinano per produrre una nuova generazione di stelle. Inizialmente queste stelle appena formate sono avvolte dalle nuvole polverose che hanno dato loro origine e non possono essere viste in luce visibile, ma dopo un po' soffiano via il materiale più denso e la loro potente radiazione si riversa per ionizzare il gas circostante, facendolo brillare di luce. Questi elementi sono tutti presenti in questa immagine - la miscela di gas incandescente e polvere scura è stata scolpita in modelli complessi sul cielo dalla radiazione stellare, come fumo attorno al fuoco.
Questa particolare immagine è stata ottenuta con lo strumento FORS 2 sul Very Large Telescope dell'ESO, situato nel duro ambiente del deserto di Atacama in Cile. FORS 2 è uno strumento estremamente versatile in grado di produrre immagini di altissima qualità (come questa!). È anche uno spettrografo che può dividere la luce che raccoglie in un arcobaleno di colori, dando agli astronomi informazioni sulla composizione chimica degli oggetti attraverso l'Universo.
Questa immagine è stata creata come parte del programma ESO Cosmic Gems, un'iniziativa di sensibilizzazione per la produzione di immagini di oggetti interessanti, intriganti o visivamente attraenti utilizzando i telescopi dell'ESO, ai fini dell'educazione e della divulgazione al pubblico. Il programma utilizza il tempo del telescopio che non può essere utilizzato per le osservazioni scientifiche. Tutti i dati raccolti possono anche essere adatti a scopi scientifici e resi disponibili agli astronomi attraverso l'archivio scientifico dell'ESO.
