Alto e potente
Forse vi chiederete cosa c’entra un camion con l’astronomia. Ebbene, questo non è un camion ordinario - è un trasportatore ALMA !
Con 20 metri di lunghezza e 10 metri di larghezza, è uno dei due veicoli disegnati su misura e usati per trasportare le 66 antenne che costituiscono ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array). Dalla sua posizione a 5000 metri di altitudine sopra il livello del mare, in alto nel deserto cileno di Atacama, ALMA offre una vista unica dell’universo a bassa temperatura, permettendo agli astronomi di studiare come le stelle si formano con un livello di dettaglio mai raggiunto.
Questi camion - questo si chiama Lore, mentre suo fratello Otto - spostano ogni antenna lungo il percorso di 28 chilometri dal sito di costruzione, a solo 3000 metri di altitudine, fino al sito principale dei telescopi, circa 2000 metri più in alto. Essi sono usati attualmente per muovere le antenne in configurazioni diverse, che corrispondono a diversi modi di osservazioni della rete.
Robusto e resistente, come deve essere un veicolo che opera in tali estreme condizioni, un trasportatore ALMA è anche un attrezzo delicato e preciso, capace di posizionare un’antenna con una precisione millimetrica.
