Sorpresa all’interna della nuvola
Quest’immagine mostra una regione della Via Lattea che si trova all’interno della costellazione dello Scorpione, vicino al piano centrale della galassia. Questa regione ospita una densa nube di polvere e gas associata alla nube molecolareIRAS 16562-3959, chiaramente visibile come una macchia arancione in mezzo al ricco gruppo di stelle al centro dell’immagine.
Nubi come questa sono terreni fertili per nuove stelle. Al centro della nube l’oggetto brillante conosciuto come G345.4938+01.4677 può essere appena visto oltre il velo di gas e polvere. Si tratta di una stella molto giovane, che si sta formando adesso, mentre la nube collassa sotto l'azione della propria forza di gravità.
Questa stella giovane è molto brillante e pesante - circa 15 più massiva del Sole - ed è coinvolta in una recente scoperta da parte dell' Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Il team di astronomi ha scoperte cose sorprendenti all’interno di G345.4938+01.4677: c’è un grande disco di gas e polvere attorno alla stella nascente e un flusso di materia si allontana da esso verso l'esterno.
Le teorie attuali predicono che un tale flusso e neppure il disco stesso, dovrebbero esistere attorno a stelle come G345.4938+01.4677 a causa della forte radiazione proveniente da una nuova stella di tale massa, che dovrebbe respingere il materiale lontano dalla stella.
Quest’immagine è stata ripresa con il Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA), che fa parte dell’osservatorio ESO di Paranal nel deserto di Atacama in Cile. Si tratta del più grande telescopio al mondo dedicato alle mappature del cielo, con un specchio principale di più di 4 metri di diametro. L’immagine a colori è stata prodotta dalla survey VVV, una delle sei grandi survey pubbliche, dedicata principalmente a mappare il cielo australe.
La stella brillante nel fondo a sinistra dell’immagine è conosciuta come HD 1532200.
