Immagine a falsi colori di NGC 4650A ottenuta da MUSE
Questa immagine composita a colori dell'insolita galassia ad anello polare NGC 4650A è stata ottenuta a partire da dati ottenuti dal nuovo strumento MUSE installato sul VLT (Very Large Telescope) dell'ESO. Per ogni punto di questa galassia spettacolare il nuovo strumento divide la luce nei suoi colori componenti - rivelando in dettaglio le proprietà chimiche e fisiche di ogni punto. Questa immagine si basa su un mosaico di tre serie di dati di MUSE ottenuti appena dopo la prima luce dello strumento all'inizio del 2014.
Per costruire questa immagine sono state selezionate alcune regioni dello spettro per formare una singola immagine a colori. Inoltre le zone incandescenti di formazione stellare nell'insolito disco che circonda la galassia sono state colorate in modo da rappresentarne la velocità - le regioni in blu si stanno avvicinando, rispetto al centro della galassia, mentre le regioni in rosso si allontanano, a causa della rotazione del disco.
