Zooming into the HH 1177 young star

This video starts with a wide view of the Milky Way, zooming into the Large Magellanic Cloud 160 000 light-years away, all the way to the young star system HH 1177 within it. With the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope, astronomers found a jet system coming from a young, massive star. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in which ESO is a partner, a rotating disc was also discovered — a first outside our own galaxy. An artist’s impression, at the end, reveals the system according to these observations.
