Footage of the M5 support cell at Sener
This footage, provided by Sener, shows the M5 support cell at the company's premises near Barcelona, Spain. M5 is the fifth mirror on the light path of ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and it will be part of the telescope's adaptive-optics system, which will correct for disturbances in ELT observations caused by the Earth's atmosphere, winds, and telescope mechanisms. To do this, the cell supporting M5, built by Sener, will adjust the angle of the mirror to within a few tens of milli-arcsecond accuracy up to 10 times per second, all without bending the mirror.
