This image shows part of the Very Large Telescope array (VLT), a Unit Telescope on the right and an Auxiliary Telescope on the left. The Paranal Observatory hosts four Unit Telescopes that have main mirrors with a diameter of 8.2 metres. Four 1.8-meter Auxiliary Telescopes can be connected to form the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The Auxiliary Telescopes can be moved around the VLT platform and are self-contained.
