A sea of clouds
View of the western horizon taken from the VLT platform at sunset. ESO’s Paranal Observatory is located at 2600 metres altitude, only 12 km away from the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Because of a thermal inversion layer in the atmosphere, what is typically seen from the observatory is not the ocean itself, but a vast sea of clouds.
