The APP optics
Photograph of the Apodising Phase Plate (APP) optics just before the unit was put into the NACO instrument. The APP appears bright yellow in the centre of this image, but is very transparent in the infrared. Precise variations in its thickness create phase variations that transform the waves of light in the required way, somewhat like the way waves on the ocean surface can bend sunlight to form caustic patterns on the sandy bottom.
