La Silla bathed in sunlight
This beautiful image shows the barren landscape surrounding ESO's La Silla Observatory, which became ESO's first observing site in 1969. La Silla is located 600 km north of Santiago, in the outskirts of the Chilean Atacama Desert. The numerous telescopes there have led to an enormous number of scientific discoveries, including several "firsts".
