Milky Way over the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope
This stunning panorama — extended to 360 x 180 degrees (with black)— shows the Milky Way arching over the decommissioned Swedish–ESO Submillimetre Telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory. When constructed, this pioneering instrument was the only large sub-millimetre telescope in the southern hemisphere.
However, technology develops quickly in astronomy; the once cutting-edge telescope has been superseded by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the largest ground-based astronomical project in existence.
