Versteckt in der Menge
Hunderttausende von Sternen sind auf diesem Bild der Woche zu erkennen, einer Infrarotaufnahme von Sagittarius C, einer Region nahe dem Zentrum der Milchstraße. Das Bild wurde mit dem Very Large Telescope (VLT) der ESO in der chilenischen Atacama-Wüste aufgenommen und hilft dabei, ein stellares Rätsel zu lösen.
Das Zentrum der Milchstraße ist die Region mit der höchsten Sternentstehungsrate in der gesamten Galaxie. Bisher hat man jedoch nur einen Bruchteil der jungen Sterne gefunden, die hier zu erwarten waren: Es gibt indirekte Hinweise darauf, dass in der jüngsten Vergangenheit viel mehr Sterne geboren wurden, als wir tatsächlich sehen. Das liegt daran, dass der Blick ins Zentrum der Galaxie nicht einfach ist: Staub- und Gaswolken blockieren das Licht der Sterne und verdecken die Sicht. Infrarotinstrumente wie die HAWK-I-Kamera am VLT ermöglichen es, durch diese Wolken hindurchzuschauen und die dahinterliegenden Sterne zu erkennen.
In einer aktuellen Studie analysierte Francisco Nogueras Lara, Astronom bei der ESO in Deutschland, VLT-Daten von Sagittarius C, einer Region, die aufgrund ihrer chemischen Zusammensetzung ein vielversprechender Kandidat für die Entstehung neuer Sterne ist. Und es hat sich gelohnt: Er fand heraus, dass diese Region viel reicher an jungen Sternen ist als andere Gebiete im galaktischen Zentrum. Ein Blick in ähnliche Regionen ist nun ein vielversprechender Ansatz, auch die anderen fehlenden jungen Sterne zu finden.
