Orion schaut auf ALMA herunter
Hoch am chilenischen Nachthimmel wacht der Himmelsjäger Orion über den Antennen des Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Arrays (ALMA). Mit seiner markanten Sanduhrform und den drei hellen Gürtelsternen in der Mitte ist das Sternbild leicht zu erkennen. Das Schwert des Orion beherbergt eine der atemberaubendsten Objekte des Nachthimmels – den Orionnebel, der den mittleren „Stern“ des Schwerts bildet. Unter guten Beobachtungsbedingungen ist er mit bloßem Auge als unscharfes Nebelfleckchen sichtbar.
Die drei im Bild sichtbaren Antennen repräsentieren nur einen kleinen Teil des vollständigen ALMA-Antennenfeldes, das aus insgesamt 66 Antennen besteht. Mithilfe der Technik der Interferometrie vereinigt ALMA die Signale aller Antennen, die bis zu 16 Kilometer voneinander entfernt stehen können, zu einem riesigen einzelnen Teleskop. Die Anlage wird bis zum Jahr 2013 fertiggestellt sein, erste wissenschaftliche Beobachtungen mit einem Teil des Antennenfeldes laufen seit Ende 2011.
Das Chajnantor-Plateau auf 5000 Metern Höhe in den Gebirgsausläufern der chilenischen Anden ist eine der trockensten Gebiete der Welt und garantiert ALMA herausragende Beobachtungsbedingungen. Ein hoher und trockener Beobachtungsort wie Chajnantor ist notwendig, weil Wasserdampf und Sauerstoff der Erdatmosphäre die Millimeter- und Submillimeterwellenlängen des Lichts, für deren Beobachtung ALMA entwickelt wurde, stark absorbieren.
Auf diesem Foto werden die Antennen an der Operation Support Facility von ALMA, die auf einer Höhe von 2900 Metern liegt, überprüft. Einmal getestet und vollständig ausgerüstet, werden sie auf das Chajnantor-Plateau transportiert, um dort ihre Arbeit aufzunehmen.

ALMA ist eine internationale Einrichtung, die gemeinsam von Europa, Nordamerika und Ostasien in Zusammenarbeit mit der Republik Chile getragen wird. Bei Entwicklung, Aufbau und Betrieb des Observatoriums ist die ESO zuständig für den europäischen Beitrag, das National Astronomical Observatory of Japan für Ostasien und das National Radio Astronomy Observatory für den nordamerikanischen Beitrag. Das Joint ALMA Observatory übernimmt die übergreifende Projektleitung für den Aufbau, die Inbetriebnahme und den Beobachtungsbetrieb von ALMA.
