VLT/VIMOS-Beobachtungen der Schockfront im Supernovaüberrest SN 1006
Detaillierte Beobachtungen der Überbleibsel einer Supernova, die vor eintausend Jahren stattgefunden hat, mit dem Very Large Telescope (VLT) der ESO haben neue Hinweise auf den Ursprung der kosmischen Strahlung geliefert.
Das linke Bild zeigt den gesamten Supernovaüberrest SN 1006 im Radiobereich (Rot), im Röntgenlicht (Blau) und im sichtbaren Licht (Gelb). Das zweite Bild entspricht dem mit einem kleinen Quadrat in der linken Abbildung markierten Gebiet, und zeigt eine Detailaufnahme der erstaunlich schmalen Schockregion, die mit dem NASA/ESA Hubble-Weltraumteleskop gewonnen wurde. An dieser Stelle prallt das Material der Supernova auf interstellare Materie. Das dritte Bild zeigt, wie die Integral Field Unit des Instrumentes VIMOS das Bild in viele kleine Areale aufteilt. Das auf jedes der Areale treffende Licht wird dann in seine Spektralfarben zerlegt. Bei der Analyse dieser Spektren können dann räumlich aufgelöste Karten der Eigenschaften des beobachteten Objektes erstellt werden. Das im rechten Panel gezeigte Beispiel ist eine Karte einer solchen Eigenschaft des Gases – nämlich der Breite einer Spektrallinie. Diese Linienbreite erweist sich als erstaunlich variabel, und legt so zusammen mit anderen Indikatoren die Existenz sehr schneller Protonen nahe.
