ESO und SKAO unterzeichnen Kooperationsabkommen

Die ESO und das Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) haben eine Kooperationsvereinbarung unterzeichnet, die Bereiche wie Strategie und Steuerung, Kommunikation, internationale Beziehungen, wissenschaftliche Koordinierung und Nachhaltigkeit, Vielfalt und Teilhabe umfasst. Die Vereinbarung wurde heute am Hauptsitz der ESO in Garching bei München von SKAO-Generaldirektor Phil Diamond und ESO-Generaldirektor Xavier Barcons unterzeichnet.
Das SKAO ist eine zwischenstaatliche Organisation, deren Ziel es ist, hochmoderne Radioteleskope zu bauen und zu betreiben, um unser Verständnis des Universums zu verändern. Daher gibt es erhebliche Überschneidungen zwischen den Interessen des SKAO und der ESO, deren Aufgabe es ist, fortschrittliche bodengebundene Observatorien zu entwickeln, zu bauen und zu betreiben und die internationale Zusammenarbeit in der Astronomie zu fördern. Tatsächlich arbeiten ESO und SKAO seit dessen Gründung eng zusammen, wobei Wissenschaftler*innen, Ingenieur*innen und Verwaltungsmitarbeiter*innen beider Organisationen regelmäßig kollaborieren. So haben ESO und SKAO beispielsweise zusammengearbeitet, um das Bewusstsein für die Notwendigkeit des Schutzes des dunklen und ruhigen Himmels zu schärfen, und haben auch gemeinsame Workshops organisiert, darunter einen über die Vermessung des Südhimmels mit ESO- und SKAO-Einrichtungen Anfang dieses Jahres.
Das neue Abkommen stärkt diese Zusammenarbeit durch die Förderung der strategischen Koordinierung der langfristigen Pläne von ESO und SKAO. Es schafft einen Rahmen für die gegenseitige Zusammenarbeit und den Informationsaustausch zwischen der ESO und dem SKAO in Bezug auf wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen, Forschung und Entwicklung sowie Geschäftsaktivitäten. Im Einzelnen fördert das Abkommen den Informationsaustausch in Bereichen, die technische Entwicklungen und die breite wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaft betreffen, sowie die Zusammenarbeit in den Bereichen Technologie, Software, Wirtschaft und Governance.
