Das Extremely Large Teleskop der ESO soll 2027 den wissenschaftlichen Betrieb aufnehmen

Nach einer Unterbrechung aufgrund der COVID-19-Pandemie, die Mitte 2020 die Schließung der Baustelle erzwang, laufen die Vorbereitungen für die Wiederaufnahme der Bauarbeiten am Extremely Large Teleskop (ELT) der ESO am Cerro Armazones in Chile. Während die Arbeiten an Fertigungs- und Designelementen des ELT in Europa stetig voranschritten, wurde die Entwicklung dieses komplexen und ehrgeizigen Projekts, das die moderne Astronomie revolutionieren wird, im vergangenen Jahr genau überwacht. Das ELT der ESO wird nun voraussichtlich im September 2027 die ersten wissenschaftlichen Beobachtungen liefern, etwa ein halbes Jahr nach einem ersten „teleskoptechnischen First Light (Erstem Licht)“.
In den letzten Wochen hat das italienische Konsortium ACe (Cimolai, Astaldi), das für den Bau der Kuppel und des Hauptgebäudes zuständig ist, mit den Vorbereitungen für die Wiederaufnahme der Arbeiten am ELT der ESO in der chilenischen Atacama-Wüste im Rahmen der von den Behörden des Landes festgelegten Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsvorschriften begonnen. Mit dieser wichtigen Wiederaufnahme der Arbeiten in Chile konnten die ersten Auswirkungen der globalen Pandemie auf den ELT-Zeitplan bewertet werden. Der größte Teil der Projektarbeiten in ganz Europa wurde trotz der seit Anfang 2020 ungünstigen und wechselnden Pandemiesituation fortgesetzt, aber der Bauzeitplan des Teleskops hat bisher eine Verzögerung erlitten, die auf etwa eineinhalb Jahre geschätzt wird.
Nach seiner Fertigstellung wird das ELT der ESO das größte optische Teleskop der Welt sein und mehr Licht sammeln als alle weltweit bestehenden Teleskope der 8-10-Meter-Klasse zusammengenommen. Mit seinem 39-Meter-Hauptspiegel und dem einzigartigen Fünf-Spiegel-Design, in Verbindung mit modernster Technologie zur Korrektur atmosphärischer Verzerrungen, wird es Bilder liefern, die 15-mal schärfer als die des Hubble-Weltraumteleskops sind. Das ELT der ESO wird eingesetzt, um die Grenzen der Wissenschaft im Bereich der Entdeckung bewohnbarer Exoplaneten, der Galaxienbildung oder der Untersuchung von Dunkler Energie und Dunkler Materie zu erweitern.
Das wissenschaftliche Potenzial des ELT der ESO wird durch diesen neuen Bauzeitplan nicht beeinträchtigt, und sobald es den wissenschaftlichen Betrieb aufnimmt, wird das ELT die größten astronomischen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit angehen und Entdeckungen machen, die derzeit unvorstellbar sind.
