Le Centre Galactique au-dessus du télescope ESO de 3.6 mètres
Le télescope ESO de 3.6 mètres à La Silla, durant des observations. À travers le plan de l'image, se trouve la Voie Lactée, notre propre galaxie, une structure en forme de disque vu de tranche. Au-dessus du dôme du télescope, ici illuminé par la Lune, et partiellement caché derrière des sombres nuages de poussière, se trouve le bulbe central jaunâtre de la Voie Lactée. Tout le plan de la galaxie est rempli de centaines de millions d'étoiles, tout comme un grand nombre de gaz et de poussière interstellaire. La poussière absorbe la lumière visible et l'émet à des longueurs d'onde plus grandes, apparaissant complètement opaque à nos yeux.
L'ancienne civilisation des Andes voyait dans ces sombres lignes les constellations ressemblant à des animaux. En suivant la sombre ligne qui semble briller du centre de la Galaxie vers le haut, on trouve une nébuleuse rougeâtre autour d'Antarès (Alpha Scorpii). Le Centre Galactique lui-même se trouve dans la constellation du Sagittaire et atteint une visibilité maximale durant la saison d'hiver austral. Le télescope ESO de 3.6 mètres, inauguré en 1976, travaille avec le spectrographe HARPS, le chasseur d'exoplanètes le plus précis du monde. Situé à 600 km au Nord de Santiago à une altitude de 2400m dans le désert chilien d'Atacama, La Silla était le premier site ESO au Chili et le plus grand à son époque.
