La galaxie de Barnard
Les astronomes ont obtenu ce portrait de la galaxie de Barnard à l'aide de l'imageur à grand champ fixé au télescope MPG/ESO de 2,2 mètres de l'observatoire de La Silla de l'ESO, dans le nord du Chili. Aussi connue sous le nom de NGC 6822, cette galaxie naine irrégulière est l'une des voisines galactiques de la Voie lactée. La galaxie naine ne manque pas de splendeur stellaire et de pyrotechnie. Les nébuleuses rougeâtres de cette image révèlent des régions de formation d'étoiles actives, où de jeunes étoiles chaudes réchauffent les nuages de gaz voisins. Dans le coin supérieur gauche de cette nouvelle image, une nébuleuse en forme de bulle est également très visible. Au centre de la nébuleuse, une poignée d'étoiles massives et brûlantes envoient des vagues de matière qui s'écrasent sur la matière interstellaire environnante, générant une structure incandescente qui, de notre point de vue, ressemble à un anneau. D'autres ondulations similaires de matière chauffée, lancées par de jeunes étoiles fougueuses, sont parsemées dans la galaxie de Barnard.
L'image a été réalisée à partir de données obtenues à travers quatre filtres différents (B, V, R et H-alpha). Le champ de vision est de 35 x 34 arcmin.
