Monella nimellä tunnettu kosminen ruusu

Tämä uusi kuva ruusun värisestä tähtienmuodostusalueesta Messier 17 taltioitiin ESO:n, Chilessä sijaitsevan La Sillan observatorion MPG/ESO 2.2-metrin teleskoopin WFI-kameralla (Wide Field Imager). Se on yksi kaikkien aikojen tarkimpia kuvia ja esittää koko kaasusumun eikä vain paljasta sen täyttä kokoa vaan myös säilyttää yksityiskohtien runsauden kautta koko kaasupilvien, tomun ja vastasyntyneiden tähtien kosmisen maiseman.
Tässä kuvatulle kaasusumulle on voinut kertyä aikojen kuluessa enemmän nimiä kuin millekään muulle kaltaiselleen kohteelle. Vaikka se virallisesti tunnetaan nimellä Messier 17, sen lempinimiin sisältyvät Omega-sumu, Joutsensumu, Valintamerkkisumu, Hevosenkenkäsumu ja, jottei merellisempi ulottuvuus unohtuisi, Hummerisumu.
Messier 17 sijaitsee noin 5500 valovuoden etäisyydellä Maasta lähellä Linnunradan tasoa Jousimiehen tähdistössä (Sagittarius). Kohde ulottuu laajaan osaan taivassta — sen kaasu- ja tomupilvet ovat halkaisijaltaan 15 valovuotta. Tämä materia toimii uusien tähtien syntymän polttoaineena ja tämän uuden kuvan laajan näkökentän näkymä paljastaa monia tähtiä Messier 17:n edessä, sisällä ja takana.
Kaasusumu esittäytyy monimutkaisena punaisena rakenteena, jossa on vaaleanpunaisen vivahteita. Sen väritys on ominaista hohtavalle vetykaasulle. Hiljattain Messier 17:ssä muodostuneet lyhytikäiset siniset tähdet säteilevät riittävästi ultraviolettivaloa kuumentaakseen ympäröivää kaasua, jotta se alkaa hohtaa kirkkaasti. Keskustan alueella värit ovat vaaleammat ja jotkin osat näyttävät valkoisilta. Tämä valkoinen väri on aito — se on seurausta kuumimman kaasun säteilemän valon ja tomun heijastaman tähtien valon sekoittumisesta.
Kaasusumun kaasun on arvioitu olevan massaltaan yli 30 000 Auringon massaa. Se käsittää myös 35 tähden avoimen tähtijoukon, joka tunnetaan nimellä NGC 6618 [1]. Kaasusumun tähtien kokonaismäärä on kuitenkin paljon suurempi. Alueen keskellä on lähes 800 tähteä ja lisää muodostuu sen ulko-osissa.
Kautta tämän ruusuisen hohteen kaasusumussa on valoa himmentävän tomun tummien alueiden verkosto. Tämä himmentävä materia hohtaa myös ja, vaikka nämä alueet ovat tummia tässä näkyvän valon kuvassa, ne näyttävät kirkkailta infrapunakameroilla havaittuna.
Kaasusumu on virallisen nimensä velkaa ranskalaiselle komeettojen metsästäjälle Charles Messierille, joka käsitti sumun seitsemäntenätoista kohteena kuuluisaan luetteloonsa vuonna 1764 [2]. Niinkin värittömän nimisenä kuin Messier 17 tämä kukkiva kaasusumu näyttää silti häikäisevältä.

[2] Tähtitieteilijä Jean Philippe de Chéseaux havaitsi kohteen vuonna 1745, mutta hänen havaintonsa ei saanut laajaa huomiota. Siten Messier havaitsi sen uudelleen täysin itsenäisesti ja luetteloi kohteen lähes 20 vuotta myöhemmin.

Kaikkea kerättyä havaintoaineistoa voidaan käyttää myös tieteellisiin tarkoituksiin ja se on tähtitieteilijöiden saatavilla ESOn tiedearkiston kautta.

VISTA toimii infrapuna-alueella ja on maailman suurin kartoitusteleskooppi. VLT Survey Telescope on suurin vartavasten taivaan näkyvän valon kartoitukseen suunniteltu teleskooppi. ESO on yksi maailman suurimman tähtitieteellisen projektin, ALMA-teleskoopin pääyhteistyökumppaneista. Lähellä Paranalia sijaitsevalla Cerro Armazonesilla ESO rakentaa 39-metrin kokoista E-ELT -teleskooppia (European Extremely Large Telescope), josta tulee “maailman suurin tähtitaivasta havainnoiva silmä”.
