Tähden syntymän ja kuoleman tulinen näytelmä

Suuri Magellanin pilvi on yksi meitä lähimmistä galakseista. Tähtitieteilijät ovat nyt käyttäneet ESOn VLT-teleskoopin tehoa tutkiakseen yhtä sen vähemmän tunnetuista alueista. Tämä uusi kuva esittää kaasun ja tomun pilviä, joissa uusia tähtiä syntyy ja muokkaa ympäristöään outoihin muotoihin. Kuva esittää kuitenkin myös tähden kuoleman vaikutuksia — supernovaräjähdyksen luomia rihmastoja.
Vain noin 160 000 valovuoden etäisyydellä meistä (eso1311), Kultakalan tähdistössä (Dodaro) sijaitseva Suuri Magellanin pilvi on yksi lähimmistä galaktisista naapureistamme. Se muodostaa aktiivisesti uusia tähtiä alueilla, jotka ovat niin kirkkaita, että jotkin voi jopa nähdä Maapallolta paljaalla silmällä. Yksi tällainen alue on Tarantula-sumu (eso1033). Tämä uusi, ESOn VLT-teleskoopilla Paranalin observatoriolla Chilessä otettu kuva tutkii aluetta, jonka nimi on NGC 2035 (oikealla) ja joka tunnetaan myös lempinimellä Lohikäärmeenpää-sumu.
NGC 2035 on HII-alue eli emissiosumu, joka koostuu nuorten tähtien säteilemän energian johdosta hohtavista kaasupilvistä. Tämä säteily riistää kaasun atomeilta elektroneja, jotka ennen pitkää yhdistyvät uudelleen muiden atomien kanssa ja säteilevät valoa. Kaasun seassa on tummia tomumöykkyjä, jotka absorboivat säteilyä sen sijaan, että säteilisivät itse. Tämä saa aikaan sumun halki aaltoilevia linjoja ja tummia muotoja.
Kuvassa vasemmalla näkyvät rihmastorakenteet eivät ole tähtien syntymän aiheuttaia vaan tähden kuoleman seurausta. Ne sai aikaiseksi yksi maailmankaikkeuden rajuimmista tapahtumista - supernovaräjähdys [1]. Nämä räjähdykset ovat niin kirkkaita, että ne voivat loistaa hetken kirkkaampana kuin koko emogalaksinsa, ennen kuin himmenevät näkyvistä jokusten viikkojen tai kuukausien aikana (ks. myös eso1315 ja potw1323a).
Tätä kuvaa katsoessa voi olla vaikea käsittää näiden pilvien valtaisaa kokoa. Ne ovat halkaisijaltaan useita satoja valovuosia. Ne eivät ole meidän galaksissamme vaan paljon kauempana. Suuri Magellanin pilvi on suunnaton, mutta verrattuna omaan galaksiimme se on hyvin vaatimattoman kokoinen, ulottuen vain 14 000 valovuoden alueelle eli se on noin kymmenesosa Linnunradasta.
Tämä kuva otettiin käyttäen Chilessä, Paranalin observatoriolla sijaitsevan ESOn VLT-teleskoopin FORS-havaintolaitetta (FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph). Se tuotettiin osana ESO:n kosmisten jalokivien ohjelmaa [2].

VISTA toimii infrapuna-alueella ja on maailman suurin kartoitusteleskooppi. VLT Survey Telescope on suurin vartavasten taivaan näkyvän valon kartoitukseen suunniteltu teleskooppi. ESO on maailman suurimman tähtitieteellisen projektin, vallankumouksellisen ALMA-teleskoopin eurooppalainen yhteistyökumppani. Parhaillaan ESO suunnittelee 39-metrin kokoista optisen/lähi-infrapuna-alueen European Extremely Large -teleskooppia (E-ELT) josta tulee “maailman suurin tähtitaivasta havainnoiva silmä”.
