Maailman suurimman teleskoopin ensimmäiset peilisegmentit ovat saaneet uuden kiiltävän pinnan

ESO:n Erittäin suuren teleskoopin (ELT) rakentaminen Chilen Atacaman autiomaassa on saavuttanut uuden merkkipaalun. ESO:n Paranal-observatorion tiimi on lisännyt teleskoopin pääpeilin ensimmäisiin peilisegmentteihin heijastavan, kiiltävän kerroksen sekä erikoisantureita. Tämä "pinnoite" tarkoittaa sitä, että segmentit ovat nyt periaatteessa valmiita aloittamaan toimintansa, kun ne asennetaan maailman suurimman optisen teleskoopin kaukoputkeen myöhemmin tällä vuosikymmenellä.
ESO:n ELT:n 39-metrin M1-pääpeili tulee olemaan ylivoimaisesti suurin koskaan teleskooppiin valmistettu peili. Se on liian suuri, jotta se voitaisiin valmistaa yhdestä ainoasta lasipalasta, joten se koostuu 798:sta kuusikulmaisesta keraamisen lasin segmentistä, joista jokainen on noin viisi senttimetriä paksu ja 1,5 metriä leveä. Peilisegmentit valmistetaan Euroopassa monivaiheisessa ja monikansallisessa prosessissa. Ensimmäiset 18 segmenttiä kuljetettiin aikaisemmin tänä vuonna valtameren halki Paranalille, ja pinnoitus on niille seuraavaksi tehtävä vaihe. Kolme segmenttiä on nyt tässä merkittävässä vaiheessa.
M1-peilisegmentin pinnoitus on monimutkainen prosessi, joka kestää noin kaksi tuntia. Heijastavan kerroksen lisäksi, jossa käytetään 1,7 grammaa hopeaa, pinnoituksessa käytetään myös nikkeliä, kromia ja piinitridiä, joka parantaa peiliaihion tarttuvuutta ja suojaavat hopeaa haalistumiselta. Kaiken kaikkiaan pinnoite on noin 120 nanometrin paksuinen eli noin tuhat kertaa ohuempi kuin ihmisen hius.
Jotta varmistetaan, että kaikki segmentit toimivat yhdessä yhtenä peilinä, ne on varustettu antureilla, jotka havaitsevat virheelliset asennot. Sen lisäksi, että ESO:n insinöörit ovat lisänneet M1:n ensimmäisiin segmentteihin pinnoitteen, he ovat myös asentaneet niin sanotut reuna-anturit, joita on kaksi jokaisella segmentin sivulla. He ovat myös liittäneet peiliin elektroniikan ja mekaaniset tuet, joita toiminta vaatii. Lopuksi he ovat tehneet kuntotarkastuksia ja testejä varmistaakseen, että segmentit ovat valmiita asennettaviksi ESO:n ELT:hen. Koko prosessi tapahtuu Paranalissa sijaitsevassa ELT:n teknisessä laitoksessa sijaitsevassa "puhdashuoneessa", jossa ilmassa olevien hiukkasten määrää valvotaan huolellisesti kontaminaation välttämiseksi.
Pinnoitus- ja osien liittäminen toistetaan myös kaikille muille M1-segmenteille. Prosessin huolellinen testaaminen ja dokumentointi kolmen ensimmäisen segmentin osalta oli tärkeää, jotta voidaan varmistaa, että operaatioita voidaan jatkaa, kun uudet segmentit saapuvat Paranaliin.
Kun teleskooppi on toiminnassa, pinnoitusprosessi toistetaan jokaiselle segmentille 18 kuukauden välein parhaan heijastuskyvyn ja herkkyyden varmistamiseksi. Käytännössä tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että kaksi segmenttiä on pinnoitettava uudelleen joka päivä koko teleskoopin käyttöiän ajan. Jotta tämä onnistuisi niin, että tieteelliset havainnot häiriintyisivät mahdollisimman vähän, peiliin tarvittavien 798 segmentin lisäksi valmistetaan 133 lisäsegmenttiä. Maailman suurin taivaalle katsova silmä on valmis vastaamaan aikamme merkittävimpiin tähtitieteen haasteisiin, ja sen avulla odotetaan tehtävän uraauurtavia löytöjä sen aloittaessa toimintansa myöhemmin tällä vuosikymmenellä.
