Et nyt billede viser en skummel flagermus på nattehimlen

En skummel flagermus er set over European Southern Observtorys (ESOs) Paranalområde i Chile, lige i tide før Halloween. Takket være sit store synsfelt lykkedes det for VLT Survey Teleskopet (VST) at snuppe denne store sky af kosmiske gasser og støv, hvis hypnotiserende fremkomst ligner silhouetten af en flagermus.

 

Denne tåge er også et barnekammer for nye stjerner; en enorm sky af gasser og støv, som stjerner fødes fra. De unge stjerner inde i skyen udsender nok energi til at eksitere hydrogenatomerne omkring dem, så de lyser op i klare toner af rødt, som vi ser i dette fantastiske billede. De mørke striber i tågen ligner knoglerne i vores rum-flagermus. Det er strukturer, som er koldere og tættere samlinger af gas, med støvkorn i, som blokerer for det synlige lys fra stjernerne bagved.

Den mest fremtrædende sky her kaldes RCW 94, svarende til flagermusens højre vinge, og RCW 95, som danner kroppen. De navne kommer fra et stort katalog over klartlysende områder på sydhimlen, hvor der foregår stjernedannelse. De andre dele af flagermusen har ikke nogen officielle betegnelser.

Det her flotte stjernebarnekammer er fotograferet med VST - et teleskop, som ejes og drives af the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), og som har til huse på ESOs Paranalobservatorium i Chiles Atacamaørken. VST har helt perfekte muligheder for at afbilde disse store svagtlysende områder. Teleskopet er udstyret med kameraet OmegaCAM, som er et frontlinieinstrument med 268 megapixelkapacitet. Det betyder, at VST kan optage billeder at store himmelområder på de samme billeder.

Billedet her er sammensat af observationer igennem forskellige filtre, som slipper forskellige af lysets bølglængder igennem. Det meste af flagermusefiguren; blandt andet det røde skær, er optaget i synligt lys i forbindelse med projektet VST Photometric Hα Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+). Supplerende infrarøddata giver lidt farver i de tætteste dele af tågen, og de er indhøstet med ESOs Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) i forbindelse med projektet VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV). Data fra begge oversigtsprojekter er åbne for alle, som vil dykke dybt ned i denne næsten bundløse brønd af kosmiske billeder. Man skal blot have tilstrækkeligt mod, og så kan man lade sig forfølge af sin nysgerrighed ind i de mysterier, som gemmer sig i mørket. Glædelig Halloween!

ESO driver tre observatorieområder: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO Very Large Telescope og det tilhørende Very Large Telescope Interferometer, og desuden oversigtsteleskoper som for eksempel VISTA. I Paranalområdet er ESO desuden vært og driftsansvarlig for den sydlige del af Cherenkov Telscope Array Observatory, som er Verdens største og mest følsomme gammastrålingsobservatorium. Sammen med en række internationale partnere driver ESO ALMA på Chajnantor. Det er et anlæg, som observerer himlen i millimeter- og submillimeterområdet. På Cerro Armazones nær ved Paranal bygger vi "Verdens største himmeløje" - ESOs Extremely Large Telescope. På vore kontorer i Santiago, Chile yder vi støttefunktioner i landet, og vi samarbejder med chilenske partnere og samfundet i sin helhed.
