VLT skal søge efter planeter ved Alpha Centauri

ESO underskriver en aftale med Breakthrough Initiatives

ESO har underskrevet en aftale med Breakthrough Initiatives om at tilpasse instrumenterne ved Very Large Telescope i Chile, så der kan søges efter planeter i det nærmeste stjernesystem Alpha Centauri. Planeterne her kunne være målet for de miniature rumsonder, som Breakthroughs Starshot projekt planlægger.

ESOs generaldirektør Tim de Zeeuw har underskrevet en aftale med Breakthrough Initiatives, representeret ved Pete Worden, som er formand for Breakthrough Prize Foundation og direktør for Breakthrough Initiatives. Aftalen sikrer, at instrumentet VISIR (VLT Imager and Spectrometer for mid-Infrared) instrument, som er monteret på ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT) kan tilpasses, så muligheden for at søge efter planeter med chance for liv bliver kraftigt forbedret. Aftalen omfatter også teleskoptid i 2019, hvor der skal søges efter planeter ved det stjernesystem, som befinder sig tættest ved Jorden, nemlig Alpha Centauri.

Opdagelsen i 2016 af en planet, Proxima b i kredsløb om stjernen Proxima Centauri, gør dette eftersøgningsprojekt endnu mere vigtigt. Proxima Centauri er den tredje og mindste stjerne i Alpha Centauri systmet, men også den, som er tættest på os.

Det er af afgørende betydning for Breakthrough Starshot at vide, hvor de nærmeste exoplaneter er. Starshotprogrammet blev igangsat i april 2016. Det er et forsknings- og udviklingsprojekt, som har til formål at vise, at det er muligt at bygge ultrahurtige laserlysdrevne "nanorumsonder", som er tænkt til at være de første, som bliver sendt mod Alpha Centaruri indenfor den næste generation.

Det er en enorm udfordring at opdage en beboelig planet, fordi værtsstjernerne er så umådeligt meget klarere, at eventuelle planeters svage genskær helt overvældes. En af måderne, at omgås dette på, er at observere i de midt-infrarøde område, hvor varmestrålingen fra en planet er sammenlignelig med strålingen fra værtsstjernen. Men selv i det midt-infrarøde er stjernen millioner af gange klarere end en planet, så der kræves en helt speciel teknik for at kunne svække det blændenende stjernelys.

Det nuværende instrument til midt-infrarøde observationer VISIR på VLT kan klare opgaven, hvis det bliver forbedret med muligheden for at bruge adaptiv optik samt en anden teknik, kaldet coronagrafi. Det vil mindske stjernelyset, og dermed vil man kunne observere et eventuelt bidrag fra jordlignende planeter. Breakthrough Initiative betaler for en en stor del af de nødvendige udgifter til udvikling og konstruktion af eksperimentet, og ESO bidrager med den nødvendige observationstid og teknisk back-up.

Den nye hardware leveres af firmaet Kampf Telescope Optics (KTO) i München. I den nyudviklede del af instrumentet anbringes en bølgefrontsensor og et nyudviklet udstyr til kalibrering af detektoren. Der ud over er der planer om en ny koronagraf, som skal udvikles i samarbejde imellem Universitetet i Lièg, Belgien og Uppsala Universitet i Sverige.

En af de vigtigste videnskabelige opgaver for det nye Europæiske Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) bliver at finde og studere mulige beboelige planeter i kredsløb om andre stjerner. E-ELTs enorme diameter vil være nødvendig for at kunne gøre dette for planeter længere borte i Mælkevejen, men VLTs samlede spejlareal er lige netop nok til at klare opgaven for planeter omkring den nærmeste stjerne Alpha Centauri.

De nyudviklede muligheder med VISIR vil også kunne forbedre mulighederne for instrumentet METIS, som skal monteres på E-ELT. Den viden, som nu indsamles, vil direkte kunne anvendes i fremtiden. E-ELTs enorme størrelse vil gøre det muligt for METIS at finde og studere exoplaneter på størrelse med Mars ved Alpha Centauri, hvis de findes, og instrumentet kan også finde planeter, som kan være beboelige, omkring andre af de nære stjerner.

The Breakthrough Initiatives er et program for videnskabelig og teknologisk udvikling, som er startet i 2015 af internetinvestor og filantrop Yuri Milner med det formål at uforske Universet, at finde videnskabeligt bevis for liv udenfor Jorden samt at støtte den offentlige debat ud fra et planetært perspektiv.

Breakthrough Starshot er et forsknings- og udviklingsprogram til $100 millioner, hvis formål er at undersøge mulighederne for ny teknologi, som skal gøre det muligt at sende ultralette rumsonder afsted med en hastighed på 20% af lysets, og at lægge grundlaget for en forbiflyvning af Alpha Centauri systemet indenfor den næste generation.

ESO er den fremmeste fællesnationale astronomiorganisation i Europa, og verdens langt mest produktive jordbaserede astronomiske observatorium. 16 lande er med i ESO: Belgien, Brazilien, Danmark, Finland, Frankrig, Italien, Nederlandene, Polen, Portugal, Spanien, Sverige, Schweiz, Storbritannien, Tjekkiet, Tyskland og Østrig, og desuden værtsnationen Chile. ESO har et ambitiøst program, som gør det muligt for astronomer at gøre vigtige videnskabelige opdagelser. Programmet har focus på design, konstruktion og drift af stærke jordbaserede observatorier. Desuden har ESO en ledende rolle i formidling og organisering af samarbejde omkring astronomisk forskning. ESO driver tre enestående observatorier i verdensklasse i Chile: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO VLT, Very Large Telescope, som er verdens mest avancerede observatorium for synligt lys, samt to oversigtsteleskoper. VISTA, som observerer i infrarødt, er verdens største oversigtsteleskop, og VLT Survey Teleskopet er det største teleskop bygget til at overvåge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er en af de største partnere i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden bygges E-ELT, et 39 m optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop på Cerro Armazones, tæt ved Paranal. Det bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
