Ung stjernes korte øjeblik i rampelyset

En nydannet stjerne oplyser de kosmiske skyer omkring sig i dette nye billede fra ESOs La Silla-observatorium i Chile. Det er støvpartikler i den enorme sky omkring stjernen HD 97300, som spreder lyset fra stjernen, ligesom en billygte, som skinner igennem tåge. Den effekt danner reflektionstågen IC 2631. Selvom det er HD97300, som er i rampelyset lige nu, er det lige netop det omgivende støv, som vil bevirke, at denne stjernes korte berømmelse fuser ud, for i støvet dannes der nye stjerner, som i fremtiden vil overstråle den, vi ser nu.
Den lysende plet i dette nye billede fra the MPG/ESO 2,2-meter telesopet er en reflektionståge med katalognavnet IC 2631. Denne type tåger er skyer af kosmisk støv, som tilbagekaster lyset fra en stjerne i nærheden, og det giver et flot skær omkring stjernen, som vi ser det her. IC 2631 er den klareste tåge i området, som kaldes Chamaeleon-komplekset. Det er en stor sky af gasarter og støv, som indeholder nydannede stjerner, og stjerner, som lige nu er under dannelse. Området befinder sig omkring 500 lysår borte i det sydlige stjernebillede Kamelæonen (Chamaeleon).
IC 2631 får sit lys fra stjernen HD 97300, som er en af de yngste, og også en af de tungeste og klareset stjerner i nabolaget. Området er fyldt med stof til stjernedannelsen, og det ser man som de mørke tåger både over og under den blåtlysende IC 2631 på billedet. De mørke tåger er så tætte af støv og gas, at lyset fra baggrundsstjernerne ikke kan trænge igennem dem.
Reflektionståger som den omkring HD 97300 spreder blot stjernelyset ud i rummet. Det mest energirige ultraviolette lys, som stråler ud fra alle unge, varme stjerner kan ionisere gasserne omkring, og få dem til selv at lyse op. Så har vi en emissionståge. Sådan en er tegn på, at der i det indre findes meget varmere stjerner, som når de bliver ældre vil kunne ses tusindvis af lysår borte. Så kraftig er HD 97300 slet ikke, så dens tid som stjerne i rampelyset bliver kun ganske kort i astronomisk forstand.
Noter
Teksten i den originale udgave af denne pressemeddelelse nævnte, at den klareste stjerne i tågen, HD 97300 er en T-Tauristjerne. Faktisk viser det sig, at de fleste videnskabelige kilder fortæller, at den istedet er en noget tungere ung stjernetype, som kaldes en Herbig Ad/Be. Undskyld fejlen!

VISTA, som observerer i infrarødt, er verdens største oversigtsteleskop, og VLT Survey Teleskopet er det største teleskop bygget til at overvåge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er en af de største partnere i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden bygges E-ELT, et 39 m optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop på Cerro Armazones, tæt ved Paranal. Det bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
