Hov – Hvor blev alle stjernerne af ?

En mørk sky dækker for hundredevis af baggrundsstjerner

Det ser ud som om der mangler nogen stjerner på dette nye billede fra ESO, men det sorte område i dette smukke stjernefelt er i virkeligheden ikke et hul, men et område i verdensrummet, som er fyldt til randen med støv og gasarter. Den mørke sky kaldes LDN 483 - det står for Lynds Dark Nebula nummer 483. Skyer som denne er fødeklinikker for fremtidige stjerner. Billedet er optaget med The Wide Field Imager, et instrument monteret på MPG/ESO 2.2-meterteleskopet på ESOs La Silla Observatorium in Chile.

LDN 483 [1] befinder sig 700 lysår væk, i stjernebilledet Serpens (Slangen). Skyen indeholder nok støv til fuldstændigt at blokere for det synlige lys fra stjernerne længere væk. Særligt tætte molekylskyer som LDN 483 kaldes mørke skyer netop af denne grund. Når der ikke er stjerner at se i LDN 48 3 og dens kolleger, kunne man tro, at stjernerne slet ikke kan trives i sådanne områder, men det stik modsatte er faktisk tilfældet: netop de mørke tåger er de mest frugtbare områder for stjernedannelse.

Inde i det indre af LDN 483 har astronomerne opdaget nogen af de yngste kendte stjernebabyer. De befinder sig stadig i en vis forstand i mors liv, for de er endnu ikke blevet til helt færdige stjerner.

I dette tidlige stadie af stjernedannelsen er de kommende stjerner kun kugler af gas og støv, som trækker sig sammen på grund af tyngdekræfterne i skyen. Protostjernerne er stadig relativt kolde - omkring 250 grader - og de lyser kun i langbølget lys i submillimeterområde [2]. Tryk og temperatur stiger dog til stadighed i kernen af disse unge stjerner.

Denne tidligste fase i stjernedannelsen varer nogle få tusinder af år, og det er i astronomiske sammenhænge utroligt kort tid. Typiske levetider for stjerner er millioner eller milliarder af år. I de følgende udviklingsfaser vil  protostjernen  hen over millioner af år vokse sig varmere og tættere. Dens stråling vil stige, så den skifter fra en ret kold stjerne med lys i det fjerne infrarøde område, først til nærinfrarødt og til sidst til synligt lys. Det, som en gang var en mat protostjerne vil til den tid være blevet til en flot lysende stjerne.

Efterhånden som flere og flere stjerner dukker frem fra de blæksorte dybder i LDN 483, vil tågen spredes ud og bliver mere gennemsigtig. De baggrundsstjerner, som vi endnu ikke kan se igennem tågen, bliver til den tid synlige - men der går millioner af år inden, og når det sker, overstråles baggrundsstjernerne af de klare nyfødte stjerner, som hører til tågen [3].

[1]  Lynds Dark Nebula kataloget blev samlet af den amerikanske astronom Beverly Turner Lynds, og det blev offentliggjort i 1962. De mørke tåber blev fundet ved undersøgelse med det blotte øje af de fotografiske glasplader fra Palomar Sky Survey.

[2] Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), som delvist administreres af ESO, observerer i submillimeter og millimeter lys, og er ideelt til studiet af disse meget unge stjerner i molekylskyer.

ESO er Europas partner i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden planlægges E-ELT, et 39 m optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop, som bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
