VLT ser nærmere på NGC 6357

ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) har taget det hidtil mest detaljerede billede af en spektakulær del af den stjernefødeklinik, der kaldes NGC 6357. Billedet viser mange unge varme stjerner, glødende skyer af gas og underlige støvformationer skabt af ultraviolet stråling og stjernevinde.

NGC 6357 [1] ligger dybt i Mælkevejen i stjernebilledet Scorpius (Skorpionen). Tågen er et område, hvor nye stjerner bliver født af kaotiske gas- og støvskyer [2]. Nu er det hidtil bedste billede af de ydre dele af denne enorme stjernetåge blevet lavet med optagelser fra ESO’s Very Large Telescope [3].

På det nye billede ses en bred flod af støv henover midten, der absorberer lyset fra mere fjerntliggende objekter. Til højre ses en lille hob af klare blåhvide unge stjerner, der er dannet af gassen. De er formentlig kun et par millioner år gamle – en meget lav alder for en stjerne. Den intense ultraviolette stråling, der strømmer ud fra disse stjerner, har skabt et hulrum i de omkringliggende skyer af gas og støv, og har formet dem på mærkelige måder.

Hele billedet er dækket af mørke spor af kosmisk støv, men nogle af de mest fascinerende mørke strukturer ses nederst til højre og langs den højre kant af billedet. Her har stråling fra unge stjerner dannet besynderlige elefantsnabel-agtige søjler, der minder om de berømte ”Skabelsens søjler” i Ørnetågen (opo9544a). Kosmisk støv er meget finere end den slags, vi kender hjemmefra. Det er mere beslægtet med røg og består hovedsageligt af bittesmå partikler af silikater, grafit og vandis, der er blevet produceret og slynget ud i rummet af tidligere generationer af stjerner.

Den klare centrale del af NGC 6357 indeholder en hob af meget tunge stjerner, hvis medlemmer er blandt de mest lysstærke i vores galakse. Dette indre område, som ikke ses i det nye billede, er blevet grundigt undersøgt af NASA/ESA’s Rumteleskop Hubble (heic0619). Men det nye billede viser, at selv de mindre velkendte ydre dele af denne fødeklinik indeholder fascinerende strukturer, der kan afsløres med det kraftfulde VLT.

Dette billede blev produceret som en del af ESO Cosmic Gems Programme [4].

[1] Dette objekt bærer også det besynderlige navn Krig-og-fred-tågen, som ikke har forbindelse til Tolstoys store roman, men som blev givet til dette objekt af forskere, der arbejdede på Midcourse Space Experiment. På deres infrarøde billeder bemærkede de, at den lyse vestlige del af tågen lignede en due, mens den østlige del lignede et kranium. Desværre kan disse figurer ikke ses på dette billede, der er optaget i synligt lys. Fra tid til anden kaldes objektet også for Hummer-tågen.

[2] NGC 6357 blev første gang registreret visuelt af John Herschel fra Sydafrika i 1837. Han så kun de klareste centrale dele, og det fulde omfang af denne enorme tåge blev først set langt senere på fotografier.

[3] Den del af NGC 6357, der vises i det nye VLT-billede, er ikke blevet fotograferet af NASA/ESA’s Rumteleskop Hubble.

[4] ESO Cosmic Gems Programme er et formidlingsinitiativ, der producerer billeder af interessante, spændende og visuelt flotte objekter ved hjælp af ESO’s teleskoper til uddannelse og formidling. Programmet gør brug af beskedne mængder af observationstid kombineret med ledige perioder i teleskopernes tidsplan, så de videnskabelige observationer påvirkes så lidt som muligt. Alle indsamlede data kan også være egnede til videnskabelige formål og stilles til rådighed for astronomer via ESO’s videnskabelige arkiv.

I år 2012 er der 50-års jubilæum for grundlæggelsen af det Europæiske Syd Observatorium (ESO). ESO er den mest fremtrædende internationale astronomi-organisation i Europa og verdens mest produktive astronomiske observatorium. ESO har i dag følgende 15 medlemslande: Belgien, Brasilien, Danmark, Finland, Frankrig, Holland, Italien, Portugal, Schweiz og Storbritannien, Spanien, Sverige, Tjekkiet, Tyskland og Østrig. ESO’s aktiviteter er fokuseret på design, konstruktion og drift af jordbaserede observationsfaciliteter for at muliggøre vigtige videnskabelige opdagelser inden for astronomi. ESO spiller også en ledende rolle for at fremme og organisere samarbejdet inden for astronomisk forskning. I Chile driver ESO tre unikke observatorier i verdensklasse: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), der er verdens mest avancerede astronomiske observatorium til observationer i synligt lys samt to kortlægningsteleskoper. VISTA arbejder i infrarødt lys og er verdens største kortlægningsteleskop, mens VLT Survey Telescope (VST) er det største teleskop, der udelukkende er bygget til at kortlægge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er den europæiske partner i et revolutionerede astronomisk teleskop kaldet ALMA, det største igangværende astronomiske projekt. ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 40 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
