Tjekkiets præsident besøger ESO’s Paranal-observatorium

Den 6. april 2011 blev ESO’s Paranal-observatorium beæret med et besøg af Tjekkiets præsident, Václav Klaus, og hans kone Livia Klausová. De benyttede samtidig chancen til at beundre Cerro Armazones, hvor det planlagte E-ELT skal placeres.
Den ærede gæst så de tekniske installationer på observatoriet og var til stede, da kuplen på et af de fire 8,2 meter enhedsteleskoper på ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) blev åbnet for nattens observationer på Cerro Paranal, verdens mest avancerede observatorium til synligt lys.
”Det er en stor glæde for mig at byde præsident Klaus velkommen til Paranal-observatoriet og give ham nogle førstehåndsindtryk af de astronomiske faciliteter i verdensklasse, som ESO har designet, bygget og driver for europæisk astronomi,” sagde ESO’s generaldirektør, Tim de Zeeuw.
Præsident Klaus svarede: ”Jeg er meget imponeret over den bemærkelsesværdige teknologi, som ESO har bygget her i hjertet af ørkenen. Tjekkiske astronomer gør allerede god brug af disse faciliteter, og vi ser frem til, at det tjekkiske erhvervsliv og videnskabelige miljø skal bidrage til det fremtidige E-ELT.”
Fra VLT-platformen fik præsidenten mulighed for at beundre den spektakulære udsigt over den chilenske Atacama-ørken, der omgiver Paranal - herunder Cerro Armazones. Beliggende tæt ved Cerro Paranal er Armazones blevet valgt til at huse det fremtidige E-ELT (læs mere i denne nyhed). I slutningen af 2011 vil ESO søge grønt lys fra sine ledende organer til at starte opførelsen af E-ELT, som har en værdi af 1 mia. euro. Selve byggeriet forventes at starte i 2012, mens driftsfasen forventes at gå i gang i begyndelsen af næste årti.
Præsident Klaus havde følgeskab af den tjekkiske udenrigsminister, Karel Schwarzenberg, den tjekkiske ambassadør i Chile, Zdenek Kubánek, ledende personer fra regeringen og en delegation af tjekkiske industrifolk. Gruppens værter på Paranal var ESO’s generaldirektør, Tim de Zeeuw, ESO’s repræsentant i Chile, Massimo Tarenghi, driftsdirektør Andreas Kaufer og Jan Palous, Tjekkiets repræsentant i ESO’s Råd.
Efter åbningen af teleskopet fik præsident Klaus mulighed for at nyde en spektakulær solnedgang over Stillehavet fra VLT-platformen. Bagefter besøgte han kontrolrummet på VLT, hvor de fire enhedsteleskoper og VLT Interferometer (VLTI) bliver drevet fra. Her deltog præsidenten i den første del af observationerne fra konsollen på et af VLT’s enheds-teleskoper.

ESO, det Europæiske Syd Observatorium, er den mest fremtrædende internationale astronomi-organisation i Europa og verdens mest produktive astronomiske observatorium. På Paranal driver ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), der er verdens mest avancerede astronomiske observatorium til observationer i synligt lys. ESO er den europæiske partner i et revolutionerede astronomisk teleskop kaldet ALMA, det største igangværende astronomiske projekt. ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 42 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
