En sværm af ældgamle stjerner

Vi kender omkring 150 rige samlinger af gamle stjerner kaldet kuglehobe, der kredser om vores galakse, Mælkevejen. Dette skarpe nye billede af Messier 107, taget af Wide Field Imager på 2,2 meter teleskopet på ESO’s La Silla-observatorium i Chile, viser strukturen af en sådan kuglehob i udsøgt detalje. Studier af disse stjernesværme har afsløret meget om vores galakses historie og hvordan stjerner udvikler sig.

Kuglehoben Messier 107, også kendt som NGC 6171, er en kompakt og gammel familie af stjerner, der ligger omkring 21.000 lysår væk. Messier 107 er en travl storby: Tusinder af stjerner i kuglehobe som denne er samlet på et område, der kun strækker sig over hvad der svarer til omkring tyve gange afstanden mellem Solen og dens nærmeste nabostjerne Alpha Centauri. Et betydeligt antal af disse stjerner har allerede udviklet sig til røde kæmpestjerner, som er et af de sidste stadier i en stjernes liv, og har en gullig farve på dette billede.

Kuglehobe er blandt de ældste objekter i Universet. Og da stjernerne i en kuglehob er dannet af den samme sky af interstellart stof på nogenlunde samme tidspunkt – typisk for over 10 milliarder år siden – er alle stjernerne forholdsvis lette. Lette stjerner brænder nemlig deres brint-brændstof meget langsommere end kæmpestjerner. Kuglehobe opstod i de tidligste stadier af deres værtsgalaksers dannelse. Studier af disse objekter kan derfor give afgørende indsigt i, hvordan galakser og deres stjerner udvikler sig.

Messier 107 er blevet observeret meget intensivt, da den er et af de 160 stjerneområder, der blev valgt til Pre-FLAMES Survey – en indledende undersøgelse foretaget mellem 1999 og 2002 med 2,2 meter teleskopet på ESO’s La Silla-observatorium i Chile, for at finde egnede stjerner til opfølgende observationer med VLT’s spektroskopiske instrument FLAMES [1]. Ved at bruge FLAMES er det muligt at observere op til 130 mål på samme tid, hvilket gør det særdeles velegnet til spektroskopiske studier af tætpakkede stjerneområder, såsom kuglehobe.

M107 er ikke synlig med det blotte øje, men med en tilsyneladende størrelsesklasse på omkring otte kan den nemt ses fra et mørkt sted med en håndkikkert eller et lille teleskop. Kuglehoben er omkring 13 bueminutter på tværs, hvilket svarer til omkring 80 lysår i dens afstand fra Jorden. Den ligger i stjernebilledet Ophiuchus (Slangebæreren) nord for kløerne på Scorpius (Skorpionen). Omkring halvdelen af Mælkevejens kendte kuglehobe ligger faktisk i stjernebillederne Sagittarius (Skytten), Scorpius og Ophiuchus i retning mod Mælkevejens centrum. Det er fordi de alle kredser i aflange baner om Mælkevejens centrale dele, og det er derfor mest sandsynligt, at de bliver set i denne retning.

Messier 107 blev opdaget af Pierre Méchain i april 1782, og den blev føjet til listen over yderligere syv Messier-objekter, der oprindeligt ikke var med i den endelige udgave af Messiers katalog, som blev offentliggjort det foregående år. Den 12. maj 1793 blev den uafhængigt genopdaget af William Herschel, der var i stand til at opløse enkeltstjerner i kuglehoben for første gang. Men det var først i 1947, at denne kuglehob endelig fandt sin plads i Messiers katalog som M107, hvilket gør den til den nyeste stjernehob, der er føjet til denne berømte liste.

Dette billede er sammensat af optagelser taget gennem de blå, grønne og nærinfrarøde filtre på Wide Field Imager (WFI), der sidder på MPG/ESO 2,2 meter teleskopet på La Silla-observatoriet i Chile.
