Stjernerne bag forhænget

ESO offentliggør i dag et storslået VLT-billede af den gigantiske stjernefødeklinik NGC 3603, hvor stjerner konstant bliver født. Indhyllet i denne maleriske tåge er en af de mest lysstærke og kompakte hobe af unge, tunge stjerner i vores galakse, Mælkevejen. Den fungerer derfor som et fremragende ”lokalt” sidestykke til meget aktive stjernedannende områder i andre galakser. Hoben er også vært for den tungeste stjerne, der indtil videre er blevet ”vejet”.

NGC 3603 er et område med voldsom stjernedannelse: en kosmisk fabrik, hvor stjerner fødes i en rasende fart af tågens udstrakte skyer af gas og støv. Beliggende 22.000 lysår fra Solen er området det nærmeste af sin slags, som er kendt i vores galakse. Det giver derfor astronomer mulighed for lokalt at studere intense stjernedannelsesprocesser, der meget almindelige i andre galakser, men som er svære at observere i detaljer på grund af disse galaksers store afstand.

Tågens form skyldes det intense lys og de vinde, der kommer fra de unge, tunge stjerner, som løfter forhængene af gas og støv og afslører et utal af glødende sole. Den centrale hob af stjerner inden i NGC 3603 rummer tusinder af stjerner af alle slags (eso9946): De fleste har masser svarende til eller mindre end vores stjerne, Solen, men mest iøjefaldende er flere af de meget tunge stjerner, der er tæt på afslutningen af deres liv. Flere blå superkæmpestjerner klumper sig sammen på en område, der er mindre end et kubiklysår, sammen med tre såkaldte Wolf-Rayet-stjerner – ekstremt lysstærke og tunge stjerner, der udslynger enorme mængder materiale, inden de slutter deres liv i storslåede eksplosioner kendt som supernovaer. Ved at bruge andre observationer lavet for nylig med SINFONI-instrumentet på ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), har astronomer fået bekræftet, at en af disse stjerner er omkring 120 gange tungere end Solen. Det er den tungeste stjerne, der indtil videre er fundet i Mælkevejen [1].

NGC 3603’s skyer giver os et familieportræt af stjerner i forskellige faser af deres liv: gasagtige strukturer, der stadig er ved at vokse sig til store nok til at blive stjerner, nyfødte stjerner, voksne stjerner og stjerner, der nærmer sig afslutningen af deres liv. Alle disse stjerner har nogenlunde samme alder, en million år, hvilket svarer til et øjeblik i forhold til vores næsten fem milliarder år gamle stjerne, Solen, og Solsystemet. Det faktum, at nogle af stjernerne netop har startet deres liv, mens andre allerede er ved at dø, skyldes det ekstarodinært store spænd af masser: tunge stjerner, der er meget klare og varme, brænder sig gennem livet langt hurtigere end deres lettere, svagere og køligere kolleger.

Det netop offentliggjorte billede, der er lavet med FORS-instrumentet, som er monteret på VLT ved Cerro Paranal i Chile, viser et stort område omkring stjernehoben og afslører den rige struktur af de omkringliggende skyer af gas og støv.

[1] Stjernen NGC 3603-A1 er et formørkelsesvariabelt system med to stjerner, der kredser om hinanden på 3,77 dage. Den tungeste stjerne har en anslået masse svarende til 116 gange Solens, mens dens ledsagerstjerne er 89 gange tungere end Solen.
